Sending a photo collage! This stitched image combines both of our duo perspectives in the wheat field into one. The upper part is a low-angle shot of me holding a wheat ear under the night sky, with fine starlight scattered over the dark backdrop. It was actually quite cold on set, but the resulting photos fully maxed out that vast, desolate feel of late autumn or Unrealized Realities. The lower part is an inverted composition of the other person; this mirror reversal is visually quite interesting, and our hand gestures have an interaction feel of echoing each other or handing over ears of rice.
Speaking of this Arknights Jishu cosplay cosplay photoshoot, when we were preparing, we actually considered a lot of details regarding props and lighting. The wheat ears are not those props with a heavy plastic feel; we specifically selected realistic ears of rice, which carry a definitive weight when held in hand. This way, during snapshots before the lens, the hand movements look more natural instead of appearing weightless.
That night scene shoot in the upper half mainly relied on a single light plus a bit of rim lighting from behind to outline the patterns on the clothes and the texture of the headwear. The props and character setting fit perfectly; we also adjusted the patchwork style of the costume and accessories multiple times while putting them on to ensure the look wouldn't fall apart whether standing or squatting. The inverted composition in the lower half is actually playing with a spatial misalignment, making it feel like a reflection or oneself from another perspective.
For this location choice, we didn't go to a conventional studio but ran out to a real rice field instead. When the wind blew, there would be a rustling sound; although it can't be heard in the photos, the atmosphere is beautifully transmitted through that golden tone. The setting of Unrealized Realities itself might carry a bit of an agricultural, rural flavor, so we felt the combination of a wheat field and a starry sky was just right, and this ambient light provided an excellent baseline color for the post-production of the cosplay.
When shooting, capturing a duo interaction well heavily tests mutual chemistry. We frequently had to check each other's positioning and expressions, and we retook shots many times to snap that natural demeanor of slightly lowering the head to smile or looking up to gaze out. Doing cosplay is not just about putting on clothes and taking pictures; it's more about pondering the feeling of communication between characters, especially in this collage format. Piecing together two moments that are not in the same frame adds an extra layer of narrative storytelling. The wheat ear in my hand and her outstretched hand formed a connection that bridges across the frames after splicing, which possesses much more spatial depth than directly taking a joint duo photo.
Regarding the makeup and hair styling, I personally paid more attention to the coordination between the eye makeup and the hairstyle. The wig was styled quite naturally this time without being overly teased, making the texture look smoother. The makeup in the lower half also included some blue ornamental markings that required me to outline them bit by bit; though time-consuming, it made the character's intrinsic features much more distinctive. In terms of post-production, the color grading was kept as restrained as possible without randomly altering the tones; it primarily dimmed the background to let the starry sky emerge, highlighting the golden yellow of the wheat field and the color contrast of the garments.
The process of this shoot was truly joyful. Although we carried props across a massive wheat field and our feet were covered in mud, as long as we saw this kind of combination frame of a night scene and golden wheat, all fatigue was instantly wiped away. Posting this collage is also to preserve this nighttime field atmosphere. A great piece of cosplay work genuinely requires the alignment of time, place, and people, and this time it happened to be highly coincidental—the weather was incredibly supportive, the equipment was running smoothly, and both of our conditions were perfectly on point.
