[Reimu Hakurei Cosplay] The Shrine Maiden of the Autumn Leaves Season: The Fan-Designed Charm of Touhou Project - Image 1

This set of photos was indeed delayed until the beginning of this year to be officially shot, right at the tail end of the autumn leaves season. Although several months have passed, looking through the negatives still instantly brings me back to that late autumn atmosphere. The theme of this shoot is Reimu Hakurei Cosplay. Based on the classic character setting of Touhou Project, we didn't completely replicate the official canon look; instead, we integrated some more design-heavy fan-designed elements to present a visual effect that is more suitable for outdoor real-scene locations.

To be honest, the outdoor temperature in January was not as friendly as it looked. To match this red and white shrine maiden outfit, we gave up heavy winter inner layers. The overall costume uses deep red and bright white as the main color scheme, with very fine lace and trim details on the chest and skirt hem, and the large red bowtie at the neckline is the center of the entire look. During the shoot, in order not to ruin the drape of the clothing, I could only stick a few heat packs on my waist, abdomen, and back. Combined with the slight chill brought by the gentle breeze in the scene, it was quite a unique shooting experience.

The shooting location chosen this time was in a suburban park with white-walled buildings and railings. The bald cypresses in the background were at their most intense rusty red, and this natural warm-toned background formed a very comfortable monochromatic progression with the red and white color scheme on my body. In terms of props, a traditional red bamboo-ribbed oil-paper umbrella was selected as a visual guide. This umbrella is highly eye-catching in the frame, balancing the center of gravity of the character's styling while echoing the autumn leaves background. During this autumn leaves photography session, I intentionally let my hair hang naturally, and the straight-cut bangs made the whole look fit Reimu's seemingly casual yet sharp-eyed temperament perfectly.

Regarding the progress of post-processing, as mentioned in the title, this was actually an outdoor shoot with a partner from the "protagonist group," but my partner's part of the photos is still being meticulously edited, and the progress is a bit slower than expected. For my part, I picked a single photo where my condition was quite good to process first as a preview. My editing thought process for this photo was mainly to slightly lower the color saturation of the autumn leaves in the background to separate it from the bright red of the oil-paper umbrella, while preserving the sense of air in the frame. To match the original natural light, I didn't use a filter that maxed out the highlights but chose a relatively soft transition of light and shadow, making the skin texture and the reflections on the clothing fabric look more realistic.

Looking at it as a photographic work, the compositional focus of this image lies in the leading lines; the white stone railings and the umbrella handle in the character's hand form a stable triangular structure. The depth-of-field blur under a large aperture also softens the cluttered branches, ensuring that the visual focus always lands on the large bowtie on the head and the facial expressions. After all, the character of Reimu Hakurei has many different interpretations in the hearts of fans. This clothing choice for a fan-designed shrine maiden did not use the traditional armpit-baring design, but was changed to a long-sleeved style with flowing sleeves, giving it more of a traditional modified Japanese flavor, which is also more suitable for the chilly late autumn.

Writing up to here, there are actually still quite a few shooting details to chat about, such as the oil-paper umbrella being flipped inside out by the wind a few times during the shoot, rushing to catch the light before the sun went down, and so on. Releasing this preview version can be counted as handing in a half-term report for this autumn homework of mine. Daily cosplay photography is just like this; many times it requires the alignment of the right time, right place, and right people to catch a wonderful split second. Although it will take some time until the full cosplay photoshoot is completed, being able to bring out the current finished product to record my mood at this moment makes me very satisfied. Once the final photos of the protagonist group are out later, I will create another layout with a stronger sense of interaction.
