For this Shuten-Doji maid styling, we adjusted countless details from the initial outfit selection all the way to the final photos. Regarding the wig styling, I deliberately preserved the fullness of the blunt bangs and chose a deep tone with purplish highlights, which created rich dimension under warm lighting. The horns on the headpiece featured custom gradient paintwork—transitioning from deep crimson at the tips to pure white at the base—paired with the emerald gem on the forehead to recreate the character's signature details as faithfully as possible.
As for the costume, maid dresses are inherently eye-catching yet very demanding when it comes to tailoring. The black waist-cinching corset and white ruffled shirt on top, combined with slightly puffy sleeves, sculpted the body lines beautifully. The pleats on the skirt and the layers of the apron were ironed completely flat; because the lighting in the venue was quite direct and hard, any wrinkles would have detracted from the polished aesthetic. For the lower half, I paired black semi-sheer thigh-high stockings with black garter straps, alongside patent leather Mary Jane heels with metallic buckles. The glossy patent finish picked up subtle rim reflections in the dim interior, keeping the overall composition dynamic and layered.
The location was set in a vintage bar where wooden wine cabinets, colorful glass bottles, and a massive ship's helm background harmonized seamlessly with Shuten-Doji's naturally languid yet dangerous aura. During the shoot, light was cast primarily from the side and rear to establish an amber, warm glow, while rim lighting from the left cleanly defined the character's silhouette. Holding the mop was an impromptu idea during the shoot—wielding a cleaning tool while still projecting a domineering, commanding presence created a distinct sense of contrast that I truly wanted to convey in this set.
Posing with the mop was actually quite challenging to maintain. Long-handled props can easily disrupt the balance of the framing, so the hand placement and the tilt of my body required repeated trial and error. The first photo focused on presenting the full-body ensemble: both hands rested overlapping on the mop handle with a grounded stance and an effortlessly aloof gaze. The second photo used a lower-angle composition, highlighting the lines of the skirt, garter straps, and stockings from a side angle, with the twist of my torso angled to show off the tailoring along the back of the maid dress. To keep the wig voluminous, we touched up the styling multiple times between shots. The final photos captured the vintage, subtly dark maid atmosphere I had originally envisioned.
Beyond costume accuracy, the final presentation of this set relied heavily on the ambient environment and deliberate posing to flesh out the character. Wearing this outfit was truly a test of patience due to the numerous accessories; the corset had to be cinched to just the right balance between appearance and breathing comfort. From early makeup tests to live shooting, every step involved continuous communication with the photographer regarding framing and lighting. Though the process was exhausting, seeing this enigmatic maid figure come to life in the finished photos made all the preparation worthwhile.
