On the evening following Day 3 of the CICF convention, I teamed up with photographer Cha Su right on the nearby streets to capture this set of night event photos. After walking the convention floor all day, my body was honestly quite exhausted, but the shimmering night lights flanking both sides of the street instantly revived my energy. The overall concept for this series was an unscripted night-returning maiden—no overly complicated props were prepared, just a classic JK uniform ensemble.
For the styling, I chose an essential white Sailor suit with a navy blue collar, accented by a red ribbon tie, a navy pleated skirt, and black leather loafers. A special mention goes to the sheer Black stockings—this subtly lustrous material looks extraordinarily photogenic beneath camera flashes in night shoots. Nighttime portraiture can easily feel dull or muddy, but stockings with a gentle sheen catch and reflect the flash, which not only sculpts leg contours cleanly but also injects a cool, sharp edge into the composition. Regarding lighting and composition, Cha Su utilized a wide-aperture prime lens, compressing the trailing traffic lights and streetlamps into vivid, colorful bokeh circles. This balance of sharp foreground focus against soft background blur isolates the subject while wrapping the scene in a dense, cinematic urban night ambiance.
For props, the metallic silver suitcase was the soul of the shoot. Having this suitcase prevented poses from feeling hollow or awkward. For most frames, I sat atop the suitcase, crossing my legs or stretching them forward. Seated posing heavily tests core stability—you must keep your spine erect, drop your shoulders naturally, and extend your legs toward the edge of the frame to visually maximize leg proportions. Cradling a black leather satchel against my chest or resting it beside my feet added effortless storytelling depth.
Night portraiture demands rigorous lighting mastery. We set up at the edge of a relatively open plaza, which provided generous depth of field in the background while ensuring balanced, even illumination on my face. During the shoot, we avoided harsh overhead lights, instead relying on rim backlighting paired with off-camera flash and reflectors to illuminate facial features softly. The shoot moved briskly, and the cool evening breeze kept me refreshed and alert. For anyone passionate about JK uniforms and night photography, I recommend experimenting with varied seated and crouching poses, taking full advantage of nearby props while paying close attention to how fabric textures reflect ambient light. I'm thoroughly satisfied with this set—it captures a beautifully relaxed slice of life outside the hustle of the anime convention.
