Swinging the refrigerator door wide open and letting that cool white light wash directly over my face was the core lighting concept behind this photoshoot. To evoke Himeno's languid and slightly detached demeanor, I set aside complex studio lighting gear in favor of the single light source emanating from inside the fridge. For camera placement, we opted for a high-angle overhead perspective, a viewpoint that often establishes an observer's gaze, which, paired with the moody shadows across the wall and floor, lent the frame striking chiaroscuro contrast.
For the wardrobe, I chose a grey sports bra and black shorts. Instead of her Public Safety Tokyo Special Division 4 suit, I wanted to showcase her relaxed, off-duty side at home. To match the character's uninhibited ease, I donned a dark short hair wig cut with deliberately disheveled edges. Gripping a green beverage can in hand, with both shelves of the fridge stocked with matching cans, these props not only decorated the space but also helped poses flow naturally. Sitting leaned against the wall with bent knees and arms resting over my legs was held for quite a while, as matching the overhead perspective required leaning back slightly while maintaining balance.
During the session, the room's AC was turned way down, which, combined with the chilly breeze pouring from the fridge, quickly cooled my physical state down to match the icy ambiance. Casting my gaze diagonally downward rather than locking eyes with the lens was my personal interpretation of Himeno. She has been through so much; on the surface she seems carefree, loves drinking, and lives a bit messily, yet remains fiercely dependable when it matters most. That inner contradiction was the exact emotional core I sought to capture.
The most challenging aspect was not striking poses, but mastering light and shadow. Although clean, refrigerator illumination is quite harsh—without fine-tuning the angles, sharp, unflattering shadows easily fall across the face. After testing multiple distances and postures, I finally struck the angle that sculpted my facial profile while letting most of my body recede into darkness. Every shutter press required holding my breath to avoid motion blur from subtle shifts.
Producing a compelling set of photos is never easy; from curating wardrobe and props to designing set lighting and grading the color tones in post, every phase demands personal attention. Eschewing elaborate backdrops, the goal here was relying on the cleanest environment to accentuate the subject's emotional resonance. I hope this series captured under the fridge's cool glow allows everyone to discover a different facet of Himeno.
