The lighting inside the Bilibili World convention hall was genuinely challenging. Overhead industrial fixtures combined with the complex ambient lighting of the anime convention was nearly a disaster for black leather—a material notorious for both absorbing light and casting harsh reflections. To recreate Kafka's cool and composed aura, we spent immense effort finding the right angles, continuously shifting camera positions to turn overhead light into a flattering rim light, successfully avoiding large blown-out specular highlights.
This Kafka cosplay costume is packed with intricate details. The Sci-fi style leather jacket is remarkably structured and crisp, while the inner white blouse features subtle line textures; the ruching around the sleeves made the gun-shouldering gesture feel all the more fluid and expansive. The golden triangular metal accent and wide black belt at the waist serve as the visual centerpiece, while red thigh straps and black leg armor not only add a hint of danger but also enrich lower-body layering. The wig is a vivid magenta-pink, which easily looks dull under cool-toned ambient lighting, so we specifically added a warm fill light from the front-side, giving the hair strands a lustrous sheen. The prop gun in my hand wasn't light at all; slinging it over one shoulder while keeping the shoulders relaxed severely tested core strength, and I had to massage my arms after every take.
Managing posture and facial expressions was the core priority of this shoot. This character cannot be portrayed with too much overt tension; her gaze needs to convey an effortless nonchalance while subtly holding absolute command over everything. I kept my gaze focused slightly below the lens, chin subtly tucked, lips naturally relaxed. Even though the firearm was heavy, my arms had to project an easy, unruffled ease. Among these shots, my favorites are the ones where the breeze catches the jacket hem, immediately injecting dynamic motion into the frame.
When editing the pictures, I truly felt the pain points of mobile phone retouching. Along high-contrast edges, pink hair easily suffers from banding and smudgy pixelation, especially where it meets dark backgrounds. To preserve the texture of the leather and the sheen of the metal hardware, I focused mainly on color grading—lowering the background saturation and subtly intensifying cool tones in the shadows to make the subject pop against the environment. For skin texture, I preserved natural grain without excessive airbrushing to avoid making the image look flat and artificial. After fine-tuning the color grading wheels back and forth countless times, I finally dialed in this austere, sci-fi atmosphere.
The on-site shooting schedule was incredibly tight, as crowds gathered quickly and I had to slip into character without delay. Photographer Xiao L captured decisive moments with pinpoint accuracy; I barely had to readjust my poses, with most shots nailed in a single take. Although this outfit felt stuffy and the straps and leather limited my range of motion, seeing the lighting effects come alive on screen made every bit of trouble completely worthwhile. Capturing Convention photos is fundamentally different from a studio shoot: it carries the unique buzz and vitality of an anime convention, where every shutter click captures the most authentic reaction of the present moment.
