This shoot features Formidable's outfit from Azur Lane, which combines a black-and-white modified maid look with cheongsam elements. When I accepted this shoot, I was extremely excited because this costume retains the character's signature black-and-white color scheme while incorporating cuts with oriental charm, accented with red touches that create rich visual layers.
During the prep phase, fitting the wig was a major focus. The long silver hair paired with ribbon bow accessories with openwork lace on both sides required considerable effort to style accurately. As for makeup, matching the outfit's vibe, I chose a clean yet contoured base, emphasizing the eye makeup to echo the gorgeous yet slightly mysterious gaze of the original art, while slightly brightening the lip color to add a pop of vivid tone against the black, white, and red foundation.
The studio setting aligned beautifully with this theme—red maple trees and dark grey rockeries behind, a Chinese-style moon gate and wooden countertop on the right, along with a detailed blue-and-white porcelain brush holder, all constructed a storytelling oriental courtyard atmosphere. Shooting in an environment like this made stepping into character effortless.
During shooting, we designed poses around several core props. First was the huge cream-white oil-paper umbrella, which not only balanced the frame's colors but provided great extension for body movements whether leaning against it, holding it high, or concealing my face with the handle. The other was the small fox mask; holding it in hand or beside the face in close-up shots added plenty of playfulness and mystery.
Because this Cheongsam maid outfit features large areas of black-and-white contrast and skin exposure, it demands high control over limb placement and posture. Showing off the stockings and leg lines required repeatedly adjusting sitting postures and leg centers of gravity—for instance, a side-crossed sitting posture better elongates visual proportions, which paired with black stiletto heels delivers an elegant yet sharp presence in frame. Throughout the shoot, the photographer stayed attentive to capturing interactions between hands and props as well as gaze directions, striving to ensure every frame carried both static elegance and a touch of dynamic life.
Although the studio had air conditioning, posing under studio lights wearing layered clothing and double-digit centimeter high heels still drained a lot of physical energy. Especially during poses requiring prolonged static support—like bending one leg on a bench while keeping leg shape and expressions relaxed—sustained thigh muscle power was needed. However, whenever seeing the final shots perfectly capture that subtle desired vibe, every bit of effort felt totally worth it.
As a commander who has been accompanied by Formidable in-game for a long time, materializing into the character through Anime cosplay was a truly special experience. The charm of this outfit from the original game artwork and skins collided with traditional oriental elements like red maples and blue-and-white porcelain through the lens and physical sets, producing a unique visual spark. For this Cosplay photoshoot, whether it's clothing texture, styling details, or capturing character soul, I felt immensely satisfied. I hope this photo sharing allows everyone to feel the unique temperament presented by this character before the camera, which remains my constant drive as a cosplayer pursuing exquisite faithfulness.
