[Unicorn Cosplay] Azur Lane Unicorn Retrofit: Striving to Help Big Brother Today Too

Unicorn's Retrofit form truly offers so many intricate design nuances worth exploring. Bringing Unicorn Retrofit to life marks the fulfillment of a meaningful milestone for me. To embody that canonical persona—one that retains her pristine innocence while embracing a touch of mature grace—I made several deliberate adjustments to my makeup. Rather than choosing overly intense pigments for the eye makeup, I blended a generous wash of soft pinks, accented by subtle glitter beneath the lower lash line and paired with blue contact lenses, aiming to recreate that clear yet faintly mysterious aura. The purple gradient of the wig was layered with great depth, while the iconic ahoge cowlick at the crown and the metallic mechanical side accessories were arranged to honor the source design as faithfully as possible.

Preparing the outfit and props was an equally involved journey. This white Western-style dress incorporates abundant lace and tiered ruffles, giving it substantial, luxurious weight when worn. The delicate lace choker and trailing purple satin ribbons at the collar served as the crowning flourish, echoing my hair color while enriching the palette. I specially brought along a white plush unicorn doll, her most indispensable companion. For the lower half, I opted for pure white stockings; while visually sweet, they demand deliberate poise during shooting, requiring constant vigilance over posture to convey maidenly lightness and clean silhouettes.

The location was an indoor studio featuring expansive floor-to-ceiling windows that invited soft, natural light inside. The photographer, Xiong Du Xia Shan, is exceptionally skilled at capturing the texture of light and shadow: a tufted pink chesterfield sofa, paired with vintage vases and fresh blossoms nearby, created a dreamy, intimate haven. We communicated closely regarding posing details—such as how to cross legs on the sofa to maximally elongate the white stockings, or how to hold the plush toy to enhance visual storytelling. To capture diverse dimensions of beauty, we also explored low-angle foot close-ups alongside high-angle mid-shots.

I immersed myself deeply into Unicorn's headspace, imagining her freshly retrofitted—filled with shy anticipation and gentle nervous excitement, eager to be of help to Big Brother and everyone. Whether cradling the plush doll on the sofa or crossing my legs while gently playing with strands of hair, I wanted the lens to capture more than just a cosplayer in ornate clothing; I wanted an emotionally resonant, living character. Just as her lines express, Sister Illustrious praised her for becoming more mature, and she quietly yearns for Big Brother's approval. Throughout this session, I reflected continuously on these delicate maiden thoughts. Conveying that desire to appear mature while occasionally letting endearing, bashful sweetness slip through was the greatest acting challenge.

Looking at the final edits, the high-angle overhead shots and low-angle leg close-ups wonderfully elevate the character's nuances. This Unicorn Retrofit styling not only preserves her original whimsical dreaminess, but introduces an added layer of elegance and poise. Unicorn's performance in the game has been truly outstanding recently, giving us cosplayers abundant creative inspiration. Bringing such detail-heavy characters to life—from the initial makeup trial to the physical shoot—is undeniably exhausting, but seeing the flat design materialize into three-dimensional reality makes every effort worthwhile.
