Seeing people joke \"what did the blonde guy ever do to you?\", as a cosplayer who frequently goes on location, this blonde hair actually has great texture under sunlight. This time I'm sharing a finished set of Genshin Impact Traveler Aether cosplay, which is also one of my favorite Outdoor photography sets recently.
First, let's talk about the wig. To recreate that classic short blonde hairstyle, a heat-resistant fiber with moderate reflectivity was chosen to prevent it from looking unnaturally shiny under sunlight. The iconic ahoge on top is the true soul of the look, requiring multiple sculptings with fine wire and hair wax to maintain its upright curve without collapsing due to wind or movement. The long side braid was also layered so that it falls naturally along the shoulder.
Regarding makeup, considering the anime setting of Genshin Impact characters, focus was placed on eye makeup. Amber-toned contact lenses were paired to enhance the spirit of his gaze, while golden eyeliner accents ensured eye contours remained sharp under bright outdoor light, combined with slightly heavier contouring to boost facial dimensionality for this Anime-style outfit.
The outfit has rich layering, which was the most time-consuming part during prep. The asymmetric golden hollowed-out shoulder armor on the shoulder wasn't made of soft rubber, but polished from hard synthetic resin, requiring a fit to body curves while ensuring surface luster without a plastic feel. Paired with black leather bracers, the material texture shows up wonderfully in photos. What satisfied me most was the white-and-gold cape at the neck and back; the fabric is very light, so whenever a breeze blew during shooting, the entire cape fluttered naturally, capturing dynamic motion without needing someone pulling it behind. The lower hem features dark trouser fabric, which, paired with a woven leather belt at the waist, creates a very harmonious color contrast.
The shoot location was chosen in outdoor woods and grasslands, a natural light environment that best tests hair, makeup, costume, and prop quality in Cosplay photography. When afternoon light hit from behind and to the side, a beautiful rim light formed around the edges of the blonde wig; capturing moments like swinging a sword or lowering the head at this time yielded atmospheric shots. The photographer used a wide-aperture lens to blur tree shadows behind into soft bokeh, making the subject stand out prominently.
The prop sword was also key to great photos. Although a cosplay prop, its balance was well designed so swinging it didn't feel too heavy, and metallic paint on the blade showed distinct light and dark reflections under sunlight. However, attention must be paid to light angles during shooting; if the angle is wrong, blade reflections might turn into a solid white block, requiring constant adjustments relative to the sun to give the blade an authentic cold-weapon texture.
Actually, the most challenging aspect of shooting this costume was maintaining the wig's ahoge and cape shape outdoors at all times. The wind was a bit strong that day, blowing the ahoge crooked several times, so shooting frequently paused for the makeup artist or myself to help tidy it up. Although the cape was a light fabric, strong gusts easily rolled it up around weapons, restricting movement. However, because of these variables, final photos had an even stronger sense of presence. In some shots, slightly messy hair strands actually fit the authentic state of a long-distance traveler trekking through the wild—a realism I quite prefer, without over-relying on heavy post-retouching, preserving the original layers of light and shadow.
Trying different characters through cosplay is essentially experiencing different slices of life, and Traveler Aether's concept carries a free-spirited feel of adventuring in another world. Wearing this gear in the woods allowed me to briefly step away from reality. Whether it was the coordination of costume, makeup, and props, or the photographer's quick captures, everything was in great sync for this outdoor shoot. The final selected photos, in terms of both light and composition, express the character's traits wonderfully.
