Prep for this Lain cosplay shoot took quite some time; the overall concept was to visually subtract elements while pushing the Atmosphere to its peak. To capture the nostalgic electronic and dreamcore texture, we deliberately chose White studio photography with a pure white studio, utilizing expansive blue backdrops and cold white light to build an intensely chilling space. For hair and makeup, I kept Lain's iconic dark short bob with blunt bangs resting just along the jawline, clipped with a white X-shaped hairpin on the right side—a geometric detail that pops crisply against the cool-toned palette. Instead of overly complex techwear, I returned to the simplest white spaghetti-strap camisole and lace-trimmed shorts, going completely barefoot. This minimalist styling highlighted the character's vulnerability and alienation amidst tangled wiring and obsolete hardware. We arranged several vintage CRT Retro television sets in the studio; that flickering scanline and electronic static when the screens light up is something modern LCDs could never replicate. From the black equipment racks in the background hung thick and thin black cables, snaking across the floor like living electronic vines.
For the first set of poses, I had to bend my knees and lean across the top of the Retro television, crossing my arms and resting my chin gently on them while staring directly into the lens. This pose looks effortless, but it actually tested core strength, as keeping the back slightly arched allowed my shoulders to look relaxed and expansive. The hard light cast from the screen fell directly across my cheek and collarbones, and the high-contrast light and shadow instantly pushed dramatic visual tension to the maximum. The second sequence involved sitting sideways on the floor, one leg bent and the other extending naturally forward. Behind the camera, photographer Tao Tao continually guided me not to force a smile, but to imagine drifting through a virtual realm composed of radio waves and code. With one hand raised lightly touching my hair and my gaze drifting off-camera, that subtly dazed, hollow expression flowed out naturally. The cable paths on the floor were also repeatedly calibrated to serve as visual leading lines, focusing the viewer's eyes onto the subject.
Overall, from set dressing and lighting to emotional direction, the entire session adhered to minimalism. Free of flashy poses, it relied purely on body language and the scene's Atmosphere to convey the character's solitude. I thoroughly enjoyed the process of patiently sculpting fine details within this dedicated space, and working with photographer Tao Tao was seamless—a deeply satisfying Lain cosplay and Dreamcore photography experience.
