[Yelan cosplay] When shooting this set of photos, the focus was mainly placed on building the atmosphere. I've always felt that cosplay is not just about putting on clothes, but more importantly, letting the image tell its own story. To closely match this water-element style dominated by blue and black, we went through three types of fabrics before finally confirming—ice silk lining paired with a satin outer material, which can refract subtle luster changes under the warm light of the wine cabinet. The white fur collar on the shoulders is a finishing touch; it not only makes the upper body silhouette full but also adds a lot of magnificence. The rigid angled design on the gloves had its armor pieces customized strictly according to the original setting, fitting very well upon wearing. The silver chain and cross-star pendant at the waist were handcrafted and pieced together by myself, making subtle clinking sounds when walking around, and these small details are extremely helpful for enhancing character immersion.
The shooting scenes were split into two directions this time. One group leveraged the steady tone of the bookshelf and vintage leather sofa, paired with blue-purple laser beams and holographic projection special effects, to create a frame carrying a sense of technology and magical energy, harboring power within stillness. The other group shifted to a real bar setting, where the dazzling array of glass bottles in the wine cabinet formed a stark warm-and-cold contrast with the cold-toned clothing. The poker chips, playing cards spread across the table, and the goblet in hand formed a very complete narrative framework, which perfectly fits the character's setting of controlling the entire field with absolute ease. This kind of scene with complex light sources has high requirements for early-stage lighting, but fortunately, the light and shadow texture of the final photos is very solid.
For the makeup, a clean and sharp eyeshadow technique was selected, emphasizing the color of the red pupils to make the gaze look more focused and penetrating. The blue-black tone of the wig exhibits layers under specific ambient light, and the trimming of the sideburns also closely matched the character's temperament as much as possible. During the shooting process, to find the most precise posture, the photographer and I repeatedly adjusted the angles several times. Especially during sitting and standing poses, it was necessary to utilize the leg lines and black pointed high heels to extend the longitudinal sense in the frame. Every single frozen moment required tightening the core of the waist and abdomen to ensure an erect body posture.
The core idea of post-processing color grading was not to over-distort the original setting colors, separating the cold-toned character from the warm-toned background. The costume details of the full character, prop textures, and facial light and shadow all needed to be preserved perfectly in this game character recreation. This cosplay photoshoot indeed took a lot of energy to coordinate, but the sleek yet slightly mysterious aesthetic it presents makes me feel all these preparatory works were entirely worth it.
