[Marin Kitagawa cosplay] My Dress-Up Darling school style gyaru outfit

This time shooting the Marin Kitagawa cosplay photoshoot, I mainly wanted to restore her everyday yet slightly sexy school style fashion. Marin Kitagawa herself is set as a high school student who loves cosplay, so when portraying her, I felt an extra layer of resonance. For the wig, I chose a style with a pink-orange gradient, and the large white lace bow on top of the head is the soul; I spent a long time grooming it to fit her hairstyle. In terms of clothing matching, a black knitted cardigan is paired with a white large-bow shirt, the lower body is a classic pink-and-black plaid pleated skirt, on my feet are a pair of brown platform little leather shoes, coupled with white slouch socks, and the aura of the whole person instantly comes out.
Actually, before shooting this set of cosplay photoshoot, I did quite a bit of homework. Marin Kitagawa usually looks like a very cool gyaru, but inside she actually loves anime very much and is full of passion for her hobbies. When pondering her expressions, I deliberately added some playful and confident little actions. For example, in those shots sitting on the classroom desk, I tried crossing my legs, raising my chin slightly, lightly touching my lips with my fingers, or pointing at the lens with my hand. These poses can both showcase the details of the clothing and capture that slightly aggressive yet vibrant trait of the character. To highlight the leg lines, I also specially matched white slouch socks and platform shoes, presenting a youthful yet sexy atmosphere in front of the lens.
The material of this outfit is actually quite particular; for the black cardigan, I chose a thicker fabric so that the drape is better and it won't look baggy. The tie of the white shirt is also particularly large, almost occupying the entire chest position. This exaggerated 2D design actually has a strong visual impact when worn in reality. The pattern of the plaid skirt is also very important; the sharpness of the pleats determines the delicateness of the frame. I searched for shoes for a long time, and finally selected this pair of brown platform shoes with a slight aged feel, which matches both JK matching and the Harajuku style the character likes.
The shooting location was chosen in a classroom full of daily life atmosphere. The desks and chairs in the classroom, the gray storage cabinets, the blackboard, and the trophies on the cabinet all provided a great atmospheric boost. What was particularly lucky was that some interesting Robotic Dog posters were pasted on the storage cabinets, which instead gave the frame an extra sense of reality. The light and shadow conditions that day were also fantastic; after the curtains were drawn, the cool blue light penetrating the curtains hit the edges of the character to form a rim light, while the subject was supplemented with warm key light, and the cool-warm contrast made the photos look more cinematic. The photographer was very professional when guiding the actions; for example, when I was standing next to the storage cabinets holding a black leather bag, he suggested I make a peace sign, which can completely release that lively school feel.
The photographer and I worked for a long time on the day of the photo shoot, and we unanimously agreed that Marin Kitagawa's charm lies not only in her outward gyaru feel, but also in her persistence towards the things she loves. So I tried to make my expressions have more layers, not just simply cute, but also having some confidence and a little tsundere. Sitting on the classroom chair, pinching the tie with my hand and thinking—the gaze in that shot is actually looking outside the frame, and that slightly confused yet firm feeling is one that I personally am quite satisfied with. Leaning against the storage cabinet and clutching my chest is also expressing the soft side inside her heart. Through the display of these details, this cosplay work is not just a restoration of clothing, but an exploration of the character's personality.
Speaking of the composition of this group of photos, I particularly like those shots sitting on the corner of the desk. The low-angle upward shooting not only elongated the leg lines, but also made the overall aura feel stronger. The addition of the black bag as a prop also prevented the frame from looking monotonous. Actually, every time I do a cosplay, from makeup trial, styling to official shooting, it's a very physically demanding process, but when seeing the final photos, I feel everything was worth it.
The plan for the next step is to shoot more Marin. I still have many styles and scenes I want to try that are not finished for this character. Every time I do a different styling, I can feel different charms of the character. For the upcoming shoots, I might need to adjust the wig styling again and see if I can find more interesting indoor or outdoor shooting scenes. Recently, the weather is also gradually getting warmer, and outdoor shooting next may need to consider more sun protection and hydration measures.
