[Ruan Mei cosplay] An Ethereal Teaser of Honkai: Star Rail at Zhanyuan Garden - Image 1

For this Ruan Mei cosplay photoshoot teaser shot at Nanjing Zhanyuan Garden, the photographer's turnaround speed was surprisingly fast. The moment I saw this preview, I decided to post it first to share with fellow fans because the light, shadow, and composition are truly amazing.

Choosing Nanjing Zhanyuan Garden as the location this time was mainly due to its layout of classical architecture interwoven with natural vegetation. As you can see, the wooden bench and the blurred greenery in the background create a serene atmosphere of an old Jinling garden, which perfectly matches Ruan Mei's cool, elegant, and celestial temperament.

Turning to the preparation for this cosplay, the colors of Ruan Mei's outfit are very sophisticated—peacock blue paired with a deep brown main tone, plus a white inner layer, which looks very crisp and skin-brightening against the retro wood lacquer. The fabric was specially chosen for its drape and delicate luster, showing rich layers under natural light. Every little detail is exquisite, from the pearl necklace and hair accessories to the golden bow on the chest. The small pink plum blossoms adorning the dress break the overall cool tone, adding a touch of vitality and softness.

The sunlight on the day of the shoot was quite intense. To achieve a dreamy, hazy effect, the photographer cleverly utilized the diffuse light under the tree shade along with some backlit angles, beautifully presenting the softness of the makeup and the velvet texture of the costume.

For the makeup, I didn't use overly heavy eyeshadow this time; instead, the focus was on the eyeliner details and the lip color. Paired with the wig that features cyan highlights, an excessively heavy eye makeup look would have felt overbearing. So I opted for a relatively clear base makeup paired with a rose-mauve matte lip glaze, hoping to stay closer to the character's calm, composed, yet slightly mysterious temperament. The cyan-blue highlights on the wig serve as a finishing touch, reflecting a subtle cool glow under the sunlight to add more layers to the styling.

Holding that custom-made instrument prop felt incredibly magical. This stringed instrument not only highly restores the character design in its appearance, but the pink plum blossom decorations on the neck and body also bring their own spring vibe. Although it wasn't easy to hold this instrument steady with one hand while managing body lines and facial expressions, thankfully, the photographer was patient enough in guiding me to complete this teaser photo—which looks casual in composition but actually involved a tricky angle.

Although this Ruan Mei teaser at Zhanyuan Garden is only a fraction of the full set, this final cover photo has made me extremely satisfied with the colors and my state. The steady sense of history within the garden architecture harmoniously blends into a single frame with the modern Chinese-style cosplay design of the character, without looking out of place at all. As a cosplay work of Honkai: Star Rail, having Ruan Mei's innate Eastern classical beauty interpreted in this historic garden was a deeply meaningful creative experience for our entire shooting team.
