Putting on a swimsuit and standing under the sun at the water park feels completely different from the previous experience of wearing a plugsuit. The choice of using unedited photos straight from the camera this time was actually to maximally preserve that refracted gloss of the sunlight hitting the wig at that moment, as well as the authentic summer atmosphere around. Without undergoing complex post-processing filter modifications, the directly displayed colors are more vibrant, and it better restores the true skin tone texture under the sun.
Shooting under intense outdoor light actually poses very high requirements for the accuracy of wig color and makeup in an Anime recreation. For the character Asuka, her iconic orange-red hair easily gets distorted under direct light, so this time I paid special attention to the color transition at the boundary between light and shadow. The red and white striped swimsuit presented in the photos perfectly fits the summer beach image setting in the work, with the overall direction leaning towards a relaxed and energetic vibe. I didn't deliberately strike a combat stance, but chose a casual, lens-pointing interactive pose, wanting everyone to feel that it's not a distant 2D world, but a real person giving a sense of participation.
To achieve an accurate character depiction, I not only focused on the wig's styling but also specially selected blue colored contact lenses close to the character's eye color. Under intense outdoor natural light, the blue pupils appear exceptionally translucent, forming a sharp contrast color with the orange-red hair, which is a highly crucial point for the character's visual recognition. For the base makeup, I chose products that lean matte and have high longevity because the water park environment is rather hot and humid, combined with the stuffiness brought by the wig; if the makeup isn't seamless enough, it would look patchy up close, affecting the overall accuracy. The eye makeup wasn't overly exaggerated, mainly highlighting the depth of the gaze through slight color smudging to make the overall temperament closer to the character's setting.
During the shoot, to capture the most natural dynamics, I tried to slightly tilt my body angle so the frame wouldn't look too flat. The gesture pointing at the camera is actually simulating an interaction that breaks the fourth wall, hoping that through this simple action, everyone in front of the screen can also feel this relaxed and carefree summer emotion. In this photo, I intentionally preserved some natural messiness of the hair strands being blown by the wind, rather than chasing absolute neatness. This detailed handling of combining motion and stillness often makes the character look more vivid, as if truly existing in this real world.
The water facilities and the distant blue sky constitute a color-rich background. Because the backdrop itself is already very striking, I didn't choose overly complex special effects or post-processing; the unedited, straight-from-camera method is precisely in hopes of preserving the vibrancy and realism of the scene itself. For a Cosplay photoshoot, sometimes a simple and straightforward presentation is more powerful than excessive modification. The shadows cast by the sun on the skin, the bangs tousled by the wind, and the material texture of the red and white striped swimsuit all appear more real and credible in unedited photos. Compared to adding a thick atmospheric filter in post-processing, I hope even more to let everyone see the character's most natural appearance in a real environment.
This shooting experience also gave me some fresh insights into creating an Outdoor portrait. Outdoor light changes very fast, especially in places like water parks with a large amount of water and reflective materials; a slight lapse in attention can result in severe overexposure or dead blacks. To capture the ideal picture in one scene requires constant fine-tuning and timely capture. This photo exactly caught the most satisfying moment back then, with even facial lighting and a spark in the eyes. This is the so-called perfect alignment of time, place, and peopleāas long as the early preparations are done, the rest is just waiting for the most suitable moment to press the shutter.
Appearing outdoors in such an image indeed draws some curious glances from passersby. However, this is also a part of cosplay cultureāshowcasing love for a character in a real public space. What I hope to convey is not just a similarity in appearance, but the character's casual and carefree personality side during summer leisure time. Whether piloting a mecha against Angels in the anime world or enjoying the sunshine in the summer of the real world, the character's inherent vivid vitality deserves to be presented in different ways.
