This photo set was captured by photographer Qiaoyuan in the woods at night, where cool-toned blue light cast upon white-painted tree trunks flawlessly recreated that mysterious atmosphere. The costume featured the classic blue-and-white maid dress packed with details, including tiered lace ruffles, a large bow on the chest, and small black wings on the back. The lower half was paired with over-the-knee Black stockings and high heels; the design combining stockings and thigh straps is a classic 2D anime element that elongates leg contours wonderfully. For props, I prepared the iconic red long-handled trident alongside a jack-o'-lantern, where the red-and-blue color contrast stood out strikingly in the cold night.
The shooting process was actually quite challenging: because it was night, mosquitoes in the woods were everywhere, and the ground was soft mud and weeds, making standing in high heels for long periods risky for twisted ankles, demanding caution with every step. To capture that seated photo well, we repeatedly adjusted light source positions, utilizing the contrast between speedlights and ambient lighting to accentuate the curves of the legs and chest. The seated pose was designed to use the elongation of the legs to fully showcase the details of the Black stockings and thigh straps, while the pumpkin lamp in the foreground added depth to the frame. Holding the trident required finding the center of balance and exerting wrist strength, paired with the flow of the skirt hem to present dynamic motion weaving through the forest.
To achieve clear visual hierarchy during the shoot, precise lighting control was required to avoid distracting background light sources and let the subject emerge cleanly from the dark. During post-processing and retouching, the original cool and glamorous tones were preserved while correcting noise typically found in Night portrait photography and retaining costume texture. This shoot was a fantastic experience with seamless synergy with the photographer. Running around the woods in the dead of night wearing this outfit genuinely made me feel like a wandering mysterious little devil. Despite being exhausted and drenched in sweat after shooting, seeing the final photos made all the effort feel completely worthwhile. The overall atmospheric vibe was captured spot on, and incorporating Halloween elements gave this series even richer storytelling. Special thanks finally to the photographer for their dedication in capturing my expressions from diverse angles.
