[Surtr cosplay] Laevatain of Arknights: Firefly ACG Expo Convention Photos

Sharing this set of convention photos portraying Surtr from Arknights, brandishing her signature sword, Laevatain. Because these were captured live at the convention grounds under natural outdoor light, the damp fallen leaves from a light drizzle created the ideal cool-toned, moody backdrop. My biggest takeaway from this session was just how heavy that weapon prop truly was; sustaining poses while holding it one-handed was no small feat. Thankfully, we had done some lightweight modding beforehand, or my wrist would have been trembling from exhaustion mid-shoot.

Turning to the hair and makeup: to faithfully capture the character, I chose an extra-long crimson wig topped with her pair of black horns. Since her eye color is so recognizable, I selected vibrant red contact lenses and refined my brows and eyeliner, extending the outer corners to convey an aloof, haughty gaze. The outfit consists mainly of an asymmetrical black dress layered under a loose black jacket. The waist belt and silver hardware buckle strongly accentuate her combat readiness, while the red-and-white gradient lining inside the skirt hem faithfully echoes her official design.

Posing adjustments were crucial throughout the shoot. Because these were live convention photos shot in open public areas with passersby and fellow cosplayers, framing required careful angles to dodge crowds, using foreground leaves or stone textures for soft bokeh separation. Draping the jacket loosely over my shoulders effectively highlighted her nonchalant, effortless demeanor. The black stockings and chunky boots were another core focus; paired with crouching poses or letting the skirt hem flare while standing, they accentuated my leg lines with striking visual appeal. I also shared my usual wig-maintenance tip: when heading out with long wigs in breezy weather, misting them with setting spray before combing helps maintain a clean silhouette in front of the lens.

Convention photos bring a raw vitality vastly distinct from indoor studio shoots. That grounded authenticity, paired with slightly overcast, brooding weather, resonated wonderfully with Surtr's sharp persona. A lovely detail in these convention photos is how the belt, chest lanyard card, and metallic hardware caught the natural daylight with crisp, tactile sheen. The hardest part of this cosplay was managing physical balance—between the flared skirt, the oversized outerwear, and the massive weapon, my center of gravity felt precarious, demanding careful footing with every step. Yet ironically, that hefty gear added immense edge to her silhouette. In post-processing, we intentionally preserved the post-rain ambient light without over-editing, retaining the character's raw, authentic visual tension. I look forward to shooting this design again under different lighting conditions for a whole new feel.
