Squeezing in the final days before the Lunar New Year, this set of Shenhe photos finally came together right around the Lantern Rite. We chose a location by the entrance of a scenic park where foot traffic far exceeded our expectations; securing clean, crowd-free backgrounds meant countless retakes and position adjustments under the lantern corridors.
Let's start with the styling. The wig was layered and trimmed, with special care taken at the hairline where my natural hair met the lace, topped off with a silver hairpin and red tassel hair accessories for strong, vivid color contrast. Eye makeup was elongated deliberately, matched with pale blue contact lenses and muted lip color to channel her aloof, distant aura. The costume's construction is intricate: a black high-neck base layer beneath white and light-blue paneled fabrics, detailed with extensive gold embroidery and red floral motifs, alongside delicate gold piping across the waist and thighs. To keep the sleeves securely in place during movement, we secured black wrist wraps underneath the white fluffy sleeves, accented by red tassels and gold charms. On the legs were semi-sheer black stockings, adorned with thigh garters featuring red tassels and white pom-poms that required constant readjustment during movement to avoid shifting.
Holding the winter plum branch prop during the shoot often required awkward wrist angles, and holding semi-squats or leaning against railings in high heels proved demanding on core strength and stamina. The floating luminous talismans, ice crystal effects, and the translucent spirit behind me in the first image were composited in post-production. To convey dynamic cryo arts, I leapt and performed hand seals repeatedly on set, capturing dozens of bursts while the retoucher invested immense effort into refining the depth of the blue light trails and halos.
The final set consists of four distinct moods. The third shot, sitting on the stone steps with legs crossed, highlights the layered hemlines and leg silhouettes, while the fourth shot leaning on the railing aims to evoke a languid grace amidst swirling snow. Outdoor temperatures were freezing ahead of the holidays, forcing me to bundle into a down coat immediately between takes. Despite the harsh conditions, capturing Shenhe's aloof nature and intricate textural details within the Lantern Rite ambiance made every bit of effort worthwhile. Sincere thanks to my photographer and crew for weaving through dense crowds to pull off this shoot. I hope this series lets everyone feel the tranquil, lantern-lit charm of the Lantern Rite eve.
