[Rem cosplay] Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-: An Angel Descends upon Firefly ACG Expo

Our convention photos from Firefly ACG Expo are finally fully retouched and delivered! Diving straight into the core, I'd love to share my production insights on this Angel Rem (Rem cosplay) styling.

Preparing this ensemble before the convention took extensive time, with meticulous care poured into both garment patterning and prop crafting. The overarching design adopted an immaculate pure white dress, splicing abundant lace and flounced ruffles along the neckline, cuffs, and hem, finished with a grand ribbon bow across the bust. To break up the monochrome uniformity of sprawling white fabric, I hand-crafted a white cross hairpiece for the blue wig. Paired with an ethereal halo constructed from fine wire and acrylic rings, alongside a pair of papercraft-sculpted white angel wings harnessed across my back, the entire silhouette came together crisply.

Convention day was sweltering, making the multi-layered white dress and harnessed wings a genuine test of endurance. Yet to capture stunning frames, every bit of effort was worth it. For the first shot, I chose a dynamic, interactive pose—leaning forward with my right hand outstretched toward the lens with splayed fingers, meeting the camera with an unwavering gaze. This perspective gives the viewer a sudden, breathtaking thrill of being gazed upon directly by an angel. The photographer guided me to push my hand as far forward as possible, leveraging foreshortening and wide perspective to amplify visual tension.

For the second and third shots, the key prop was a white hard-shell rolling suitcase. This doubles as a handy convention lifehack: whenever fatigue sets in from walking, it offers an instant seat while naturally integrating into the shoot. In the second image, I sat sideways on the suitcase with crossed legs, gently resting a chin in hand. This pose highlighted the layered ruffles of the skirt and extended the leg lines. Forgoing stockings, bare legs paired with white cotton ankle socks and plush white bunny slippers fostered an adorably cozy, lounging warmth. In fact, this outfit took a long time to prepare before the expo, with a lot of effort put into everything from pattern making to prop crafting. The overall design features a pure white dress, with generous amounts of lace and ruffles spliced along the neckline, cuffs, and hem, accented by a large bow on the chest. To break up the monotony of the large expanse of white, I specially crafted a white cross hair accessory on the wig. Paired with the halo made of thin wire and an acrylic ring on my head, as well as the pair of white paper-crafted angel wings on my back, the entire look came together.

The weather on the day of the expo was quite hot, and wearing this multi-layered white dress while carrying wings was definitely a test of stamina. But to get great shots, it was all worth it. For the first photo, I chose a highly interactive pose—leaning forward with my right hand open and reaching toward the lens, paired with a direct gaze. This gives the viewer a mix of intensity and surprise, as if being stared down directly by an angel. During the shoot, the photographer instructed me to push my hand as far forward as possible, using forced perspective to give the composition more visual punch.

The prop for the second and third photos was a white hardshell suitcase. This is also a neat little trick for convention photoshoots: whenever you get tired of walking, you can sit down and rest, using it as a prop at the same time. In the second shot, I sat sideways on the suitcase with my legs crossed, resting my chin lightly on one hand. This pose was mainly intended to showcase the layering of the dress's hemline and elongate the leg lines. Although I didn't wear stockings, bare legs paired with white cotton socks and white bunny slippers actually added a relaxed, cozy, and cute indoor vibe. In the third shot, I posed with both hands framing my face and legs held together in front of the suitcase, emphasizing a docile, playful charm that works wonderfully for a 9-grid social media layout.

For the makeup, to complement the blue hair setting, cool tones were chosen for blending the eyeshadow and eyeliner, paired with highly pigmented blue contact lenses. The base makeup aimed for a clear, fair finish, with blush applied under the eyes and on the tip of the nose to add a delicate, touchingly vulnerable look. The lipstick was kept subtle to preserve the clean, pure aesthetic. Trimming the wig also took quite some time: keeping a certain thickness for the straight bangs and ensuring the sideburns hugged the jawline so the face would appear smaller and more delicate on camera.

In reality, shooting on location at an ACG expo is far from easy. With crowds of visitors and photographers in the background, finding a relatively clear street and the right camera angle severely tested the photographer's ability to capture the moment. We specifically looked for a stretch of road with greenery and modern architecture in the background, using a wide aperture to blur out the background and lock the focus entirely on the subject in the foreground. Passersby frequently turned their heads and some even took out their phones to snap photos; while slightly embarrassing, I did my best to stay in character.

As a frequent cosplayer, I feel this Angel Rem look successfully maintained the character's iconic short blue hair while stepping outside the conventional maid outfit—it was a thoroughly enjoyable creative attempt. The true meaning of an ACG expo is bringing people together through shared passion. No matter how hot it gets or how many heavy props you carry, leaving behind satisfying photos makes the experience completely worthwhile.
