On the third day of the Guangzhou Anime Convention at the May Day Firefly ACG Expo, I slipped into this maid cosplay outfit of Shimoe Koharu and took a set of photos in the outdoor cafe area of the venue. Although this outfit looks adorable, the preparation for wearing it was far more tedious than imagined. Let's start with the wig: the top features blunt light pink bangs. To recreate her signature black-to-blue gradient twin tails, I used invisible hair nets and hairspray to shape smooth, 3D volume on both sides, ensuring they wouldn't go limp even in Guangzhou's muggy outdoor heat. The glowing pink halo overhead, accented with a red arrow motif, was secured to the hair roots with bobby pins and thin wires, covered by a headband to conceal the wiring below. To make sure it stayed firmly in place with uninterrupted power, I even reworked the battery pack wiring several times before the convention.
The dress itself is a pink-and-white maid dress; aside from the large pink bow at the neckline, the transparent mini-pouch and small charms on the chest were also finely crafted. The puff sleeves broaden the visual width of the shoulders, which, paired with the A-line silhouette of the miniskirt, flatters the figure nicely. The black-with-white-tipped feathered wings on the back were assembled and bonded; I had a prop-maker friend reinforce the frame to prevent them from loosening or tilting at awkward angles during shooting. The black choker and cross necklace around my neck were made of soft leather to avoid red marks while retaining the character's signature look. To match the overall color scheme, I opted for white lace-trimmed ankle socks and chunky-heeled black Mary Janes—a combo that visually elongates the leg lines while matching her lively, slightly stubborn demeanor. Holding drink glasses and dessert trays, I also paid special attention to manicuring and cleaning my nails so my finger lines would appear softer.
The on-site lighting blended natural daylight with diffuse light under outdoor parasols. Photographer @DJ-kun utilized the black wrought-iron table as a foreground element, capturing that relaxed dessert cafe ambiance. The red berries in the pink drink goblet and the plated wafer cookies echoed the visual color centers of the frame, while the small pink plushie beside them—a prop I added on the fly—unexpectedly enhanced the playful charm. This maid outfit beautifully reveals leg lines when standing, and dynamic snaps of turning around or lifting one leg created a sharp, crisp contrast between the black heels and white socks, lending a refreshing aesthetic to the composition.
Shooting at a convention hall really tests physical stamina and composure. The outdoor temperature was quite high, and people bustling around could easily create a cluttered background. Thus, we intentionally used a wider aperture to softly blur distant crowds and red parasols, drawing visual focus back to the subject. The skirt hem was rather short, so to ensure confident, natural movement without wardrobe malfunctions, I practiced bending over and leg-lifting angles repeatedly in the mirror before shooting—after all, keeping privacy secure in dense crowds is a crucial detail. As for the meme board in hand, I paired it with helpless yet cute expressions, adding a layer of character-true personality expression beyond basic visual restoration. After wrapping up, I felt once again that cosplay is far more than just wearing a costume; it's a complete journey encompassing character interpretation, makeup and hair recreation, prop synergy, and communication with the photographer.
