Because I originally wanted to show another side of Rem under the theme 'If true love has a color,' I specially planned this pure white angel styling for this shoot. The wig is short, choppy blue hair. For this kind of short hairstyle, you need to pay special attention to the hairline treatment and the thickness of the sideburns during styling. To restore Rem's iconic side-swept bangs, I used hairspray for setting, and the white X-shaped hairpins served as the finishing touch of the entire head. In terms of makeup, I abandoned the heavy blush style commonly seen in maid outfits. Since it's an angel theme, the base makeup was done with a matte finish, intentionally emphasizing the clarity of the eyes and the contour of the aegyo sal (tear bags). Paired with the same-toned blue colored contact lenses, it made the gaze look exceptionally pure and innocent in front of the lens. I chose to sweep the blush under the eyes and on the cheeks, creating a mixed feeling of a slight flush and cool detachment, which fits the overall whitespace feel of the costume very well.
The clothing features many details; the large bow at the neckline and the large bow on the chest echo each other. The off-the-shoulder and separate sleeve design heavily tests one's figure, but fortunately, we didn't run into any temperature issues on the day of the shoot. The halo on top of the head was crafted using thin iron wire, and the shooting process was actually quite hard. Because the wire was very thin, the halo would tilt with even a slightly large movement. Therefore, to maintain a perfect floating angle, the neck and shoulders were actually exerting force secretly. The feather wings on the back have a great texture, though the total weight is not heavy, and posing with them gives a lightweight sense of airiness. The photos were shot against a pure white, simple European-style backdrop, and the photographer selected a very soft softbox lighting arrangement. This high-key lighting easily overexposes white clothing, so we repeatedly adjusted the light metering several times. The post-processing retouching did not make too many excessive modifications, mainly adjusting the overall white balance, adding a tiny bit of grey-blue tone to enhance the dreamy feel, while preserving the skin texture and maintaining the sharpness of the hair and lace edges.
Although this photoset looks very minimalist, a lot of thought was actually spent on the early planning, makeup and styling coordination, prop making, and shooting cooperation. Especially to express that undefiled temperament of an angel, it takes more than just putting on a set of white clothes; it requires drawing close to the character from both expression and posture. Rem has always enjoyed extremely high popularity in Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World, possessing both the docility of a maid and an innate determination and gentleness. Choosing pure white as the keynote this time was actually meant to break everyone's fixed impression of the blue-and-black maid outfit, utilizing the imagery of an angel to fit her pure and unreserved love for the male protagonist. To find the most natural posing angles during the shoot, I repeatedly adjusted the tilt of my arms and head, letting the white feathers and blue hair form a sharp visual contrast. Controlling the balance of the prop halo on top of the head was quite difficult, requiring the body to remain stable throughout the entire shooting process. This was a minor challenge for core strength, but the final outcome images make me feel all the effort was fully worth it. The overall styling restored the character's gentle yet determined personality foundation as much as possible, showcasing the pure white aesthetic while retaining the original recognition of this classic anime girl look in this piece of cosplay photography.
