[Shenhe Cosplay] Genshin Impact Studio Notes: Holding an Umbrella in Play of Light and Shadow

Fresh off the shoot at the anime convention, I received these raw photos from WiFi in the team chat. Looking at the texture of the light and shadow in the frames, I felt it was the perfect time to share a studio log of Shenhe.

The location for this shoot was the studio setup at the MengKa Anime Convention venue, featuring a spacious room with great depth and full lighting equipment. Regarding makeup and wigs, I wanted to capture her trademark cool distance and aloofness, so I asked the makeup artist to keep the eye makeup subtle. Paired with short silver-white hair and layered bangs, I aimed to present both sharpness and gentle delicacy on camera.

I was very pleased with the outfit's accuracy; holding it in hand revealed very meticulous pattern-making. The combination of black main fabric and teal-blue water-ripple lining created a lovely cold-warm contrast. The structured standing collar and side cutouts were not only convenient to wear, but also added a sleek visual line. Hand-tied red cord knots and tassels at the cuffs naturally swayed during movement, bringing dynamic life to static frames. Golden patterns on the thighs and blue accent blocks fit snugly, complementing black heels with red soles to balance Xianxia etherality with modern sleekness.

Speaking of poses, I personally love the dynamic action snapshot in Photo 2. During the shoot, the photographer asked me to try standing on one leg while holding the umbrella, a pose that truly tested my balance. To ensure an elongated leg line, I carefully adjusted the heel angle, forming a balanced triangular composition between the umbrella, raised leg, and torso. Several frames were captured, but this selected one perfectly captured the casual looseness I wanted, maintaining a grounded visual focus while beautifully highlighting leg lines.

I hesitated when picking the cover image. Photo 1 offered a full frontal view, where the Japanese paper umbrella texture radiated a soft rice-white glow under cold light, clearly displaying waist details and drape. Ultimately, I chose Photo 2 as the main cover—not only because its dynamic composition caught the eye, but also because it highlighted the bust and waist tailoring along with leg color pop, ideal for instantly grabbing attention in cosplay convention photos.

The studio was quite busy that day, with other photographers and staff visible in the background of Photo 3. WiFi excelled at using high-powered studio lights, placing rim lights overhead to create diffuse reflections from behind onto my paper umbrella, rendering the ink-bamboo pattern translucent. Instead of hunting for complex outdoor convention locations, we made full use of this clean indoor setup, leaving only light spots and floor reflections alongside the subject and props for a pure aesthetic.

When recreating Chinese style styling, my biggest concern is flimsiness in fabric. The coat fabric here offered just enough stiffness and drape, allowing the sleeves to fall into clean, structured folds rather than clinging limply to my arms. The cropped inner lining was comfortable, offering freedom of movement for someone standing in heels for half a day in a studio.

The shoot took nearly two hours, with most time spent testing positioning and light/shadow effects beyond costume prep. Reviewing the photos, despite the industrial studio setting, the outfit, paper umbrella, and lighting successfully conveyed Shenhe's unique demeanor from Genshin Impact—a character dwelling in the mortal world yet detached from it. The shoot went smoothly, leaving me deeply satisfied with these convention photos, and I hope everyone can feel the care put into this Cosplay photography project.
