From concept to execution, a great deal of effort went into this Kanade Tachibana shoot. To recreate Kanade fighting in the afterlife and eventually experiencing love and a beating heart, we experimented extensively with set design and lighting. The set relied heavily on white sheer drapes, an wrought-iron bed frame, and crimson roses, aiming to leverage the striking contrast between pure white and vivid red to convey both dramatic tension and purity. A white plush rug covered the floor, complemented by light beams piercing through sheer fabrics—special thanks to the photographer for crafting a deliberate Tyndall effect that amplified the ethereal, dreamlike, and almost illusory atmosphere.
Costume-wise, the classic white school uniform jacket features dark brown lapels, anchored by the iconic yellow ribbon tie at the chest. The combination of the black pleated skirt and over-the-knee white stockings was central to expressing the character's aesthetic appeal. We paid special attention to lighting, as white stockings can easily blow out and lose fabric texture under harsh illumination. Fortunately, the photographer's precise control over exposure preserved a natural matte finish and clean leg lines, retaining girlhood clarity while remaining visually striking.
Regarding props, the white feathered wings were far heavier than anticipated; maintaining poise, managing front-to-back balance, and posing for the camera posed a real workout for my neck and core. We rotated through a variety of handheld items: a vintage bronze mirror to evoke introspection and detachment, resting on the lounger with closed eyes gently inhaling the scent of red roses for tranquility, and finally gripping the blue-glowing blade to channel Kanade's formidable combat prowess alongside inner confusion. The character undergoes a wide emotional arc, prompting me to continually fine-tune my gaze and subtle expressions. Transitioning from an unreadable, stoic downward glance to a gentle, natural smile served as the true heart of this series.
Styling the wig took considerable work as well. The silvery-lavender long hair required precise blunt bangs and smooth strands to avoid frizz, yielding a soft sheen under studio lighting. Movement shots combining stockings, pleated skirt, and uniform were carefully framed to prevent accidental wardrobe slips.
Enormous thanks to the photographer for guiding me throughout, patiently directing poses and tweaking lights, as well as the retoucher for harmonizing the color palette into something so layered and exquisitely aesthetic. Red roses scattered across a white rug, with light filtering through gossamer curtains into radiant beams, felt evocative of that world defined by regret and redemption. Portraying her meant channeling someone initially emotionless and mechanical who is gradually reawakened by genuine warmth. While I still see room for improvement (apologies for any OOC moments), this shoot was an immensely immersive journey. I hope these images convey the unique grace that belongs solely to Angel.
