This set of dark-toned convention photoshoot pictures taken with the photographer at the Changsha Menghua Anime Convention focused on the extreme contrast between light and shadow. The pure black background and high-intensity cold light source highlighted the texture of the white bandages and the wings on the back to the greatest extent. The photographer's lighting technique was very mature; the light falling on the edges of the wings created a semi-transparent luminous effect, while keeping the facial and body contours clearly visible in the shadows. This pure chiaroscuro contrast truly holds a magical appeal.
The core of the character Rei Ayanami is gradually constructed through interaction with time and the outside world. Just as the saying goes, 'love brings everything back to life,' she is cold in herself and only gradually gains flesh, blood, and vitality through connections with the outside. To express this state, sitting posture and center of gravity were very important. Sitting on a high stool with head lowered deeply, eyes cast downward, hands resting naturally by the side of the legs, and legs crossed—paired with transparent high-heeled sandals—added a touch of vulnerability to the overall chilly ambiance. This body language conveys the character's emotions far better than deliberate facial expressions.
The shooting process was actually quite strenuous. The convention had a massive crowd, and to eliminate distractions and create a secluded dark-toned effect, we stayed in the dark-corner lighting area for quite a while. Because hard light places extremely high demands on the model, it was necessary to constantly adjust face angles and body orientation so that the white clothing, bandages, and thigh lines gained three-dimensionality under the harsh light without losing details due to excessive reflection. On-site, I also repeatedly discussed camera positioning and exposure parameters with the photographer, striving to capture the texture of the wing feathers and the skin of the legs in the dark environment.
Many attempts were also made in styling and makeup. To fit the dark, cool-toned environment, the base makeup leaned toward a pale cool shade, emphasizing shadows where necessary to sculpt dimensionality. The white wrist guards and knee bandages showed a clean texture under the light, forming a striking contrast against the dark background. This extremely simplified color palette and composition direct the viewer's gaze entirely toward the character's state. Working with the photographer on a creation with such demanding lighting requirements was a very intriguing endeavor and an exploration of self-expression. The entire process required complete devotion to interpret the character's quiet, aloof, and lonely atmosphere. These convention photos serve as a record of my experience at the Changsha Menghua Anime Convention and my actual shooting journey.
