Dressing in this Dan Heng outfit from base layers to armor, paired with securing the wig and horn ornaments, took nearly forty full minutes. While the black-and-gold armor pieces boasted exquisite texture, the rigid material restricted bending my arms freely. The teal-blue cape and long trailing hems were quite extensive; navigating gravel trails kept me constantly worried that sharp rocks might tear the delicate fabric, forcing me to hoist the skirts as I trudged forward.
For this location shoot, we selected a high-altitude mountain range framed by spectacular jagged gray rocky peaks. The sunlight was piercing that day and the mountain winds blew fiercely; thick coats of strong-hold hairspray were required to keep the hairstyle intact. Walking across the gravel paths made moving forward arduous in this attire. Just as I playfully vented in my post, my mind was racing with just one urgent thought: 'Where on earth is the nearest restroom around here?!' Hunting for a restroom had me pacing back and forth across that stretch several times, which the photographer astutely turned into candid walking shots. For the camera's sake, despite inner turmoil, I maintained a serene, unflappable expression, stepping with purposeful poise—such is the sheer conviction of a cosplayer.
Reaching the grassy slope, the scenery suddenly opened wide before us: rolling slopes carpeted in yellow wildflowers and emerald grass, with crisp mountain ridges carving into the horizon. Here we paused, joined by my fellow cosplayer. Collapsing into the wildflowers, the rigid armor dug into my back, but to project an effortless, relaxed demeanor, I adjusted my posture and braced myself with one hand against the earth. Mountain cable cars passing overhead introduced an intriguing touch of modernity into the frame. Shooting up here was physically draining, carrying heavy gear across steep alpine terrain while constantly watching our footing for hidden dips and rocks.
The costume itself features intricate complexities: the chest plates, belt, bracers, and tactical gloves all required precise alignment to accurately reflect the character's aura on camera (reminiscent of Dan Heng • Permansor Terrae). To secure the golden horns flanking my temples, I hid multiple bobby pins inside the wig and used skin wax to blend the seam lines, ensuring high winds wouldn't expose any flaws. High-altitude sunlight is intensely harsh; UV rays beating down directly onto black faux leather spiked body heat rapidly, yet in the shade, the mountain drafts blew bitterly cold. This swinging temperature tested stamina and condition heavily, requiring frequent makeup touch-ups to prevent the foundation from breaking down.
Pacing along that winding gravel path was the ultimate endurance test. With the cape and trailing robes fluttering wild in the wind, I held the edges lightly, maintaining a dashing, wind-conquering stride. Truthfully, I was merely eager to wrap up that section and dash for a restroom. That sheer urgency inadvertently quickened my pace, tightening leg muscles while boots crunched against loose gravel. In the photos, it looks like a hero marching toward some epic destiny, whereas reality was a race against biological needs—a comical contrast that gifted this shoot a touch of humor.
Once in the meadow flower sea, we embarked on two-person interactions. My pink-haired companion wore pristine White stockings and tall boots, creating striking chromatic contrast against lush green grasses and sunny yellow petals. To capture an organic reclining pose, we tested multiple angles. Bracing one hand in the grass and half-shielding my face with the other helped deflect the blazing glare; tilting my head subtly served both compositional balance and relief from the blinding sun. Though tiny insects buzzed through the flora and the ground was bumpy, overcoming these minor discomforts was worth capturing this raw, untouched wilderness.
We deployed a variety of focal lengths for this shoot: wide angles established the immense mountain scale and solitary human presence, medium shots showcased the flowing drapery of the garments, and tight close-ups highlighted the metallic luster of the armor and facial makeup details. In post-production, we prioritized preserving authentic on-site tonal values, allowing the cool gray stone peaks to resonate with the teal-blue cape. Snapping the shutter precisely when the gale caught the cape was vital to seize that dynamic motion. I kept lighting and colors natural without stylized over-grading, aiming to present the sweeping grandeur of the high-altitude meadow. Outdoor shoots carry unpredictable elements—sudden cloud cover or sudden gusts—demanding rapid adaptation. Yet reviewing the vivid finished frames on the camera screen made braving altitude and the restroom panic completely worthwhile. Every detail of this costume shone under natural sunlight, truly honoring the lengthy dressing process.
