[Rei Ayanami cosplay] Crying Out Love in the Center of the World: Quiet Moments on the Abandoned Railway Tracks

The wind blowing across the abandoned railway tracks carried a hint of early autumn chill. This Rei Ayanami cosplay shoot from Neon Genesis Evangelion had actually been envisioned in my mind countless times. I saw the caption: 'Crying out love in the center of the world; tears are scalding hot—is love at this temperature too?' That line resonates with this character so deeply. To capture that lonely, ethereal chill infused deep down with a hidden warmth, I discussed ideas at length with my photographer @草履虫也会梦见花火, ultimately deciding to complete this creation on an abandoned railway track half-encircled by urban high-rises.

When speaking of Rei Ayanami, most people's immediate impressions are short blue hair, red eyes, and that utmost detached tranquility. To accurately recreate this temperament on camera, I devoted extensive effort to hair and makeup. The eye makeup specifically emphasized cool-toned contours paired with red colored contacts, aiming to convey an expression devoid of heavy subjective emotions yet seemingly harboring countless untold stories. The costume is the classic Tokyo-3 First Municipal Middle School girls' uniform: a white short-sleeved blouse with a deep crimson ribbon securely tied at the collar, layered beneath a turquoise sleeveless pinafore dress. To enhance depth and visual contrast, the lower half was paired with Black calf socks and white flat canvas sneakers. Standing on the tracks in this School uniform cosplay, that surreal magic of crossing dimensions instantly came alive.

The overcast sky on the day of the shoot provided soft, diffused lighting rather than harsh direct sunlight, offering plenty of creative freedom. This gentle light gave the frames a misty, nostalgic Japanese film aesthetic. For the first setup, I sat on the rust-stained tracks with legs crossed, resting my hands on the weathered railroad ties. The overgrown weeds softened the coldness of the metal, creating striking visual tension between the desolate surroundings and the clean lines of the uniform. The photographer was exceptional at catching details, guiding my gaze in different directions—sometimes looking down in contemplation, other times standing still in the center of the tracks holding a small bouquet of white flowers, as if waiting for something, or bidding farewell.

Holding a phone and wired earphones while glancing back into the lens was my concrete visualization of Rei Ayanami blending into modern daily life. Perhaps she, too, would seek out her own quiet corner in this noisy world, using music to insulate herself from outside clamor. Throughout the shoot, I continually sought emotional restraint—facial expressions couldn't be overdone, and subtle nuances were paramount. Like in the close-up shot where my fingers gently graze my cheek while gazing straight into the lens, I wanted simple, clean gestures to directly convey that chilling purity straight to the heart.

Even though the entire shoot took place amidst mud and weeds, the creative state was wonderful. Behind every stunning shot was the photographer's dedication to hunting angles and communicating posture back and forth with me. This set is not only an expression of love for Neon Genesis Evangelion and the character of Rei Ayanami, but also a deeply immersive milestone on my cosplay journey. I prefer not to pile up flamboyant rhetoric to explain my understanding of a character; I only wished that at the exact moment the shutter clicked, I was her—standing on the borderline between ruins and city, feeling the scalding warmth of tears and the quiet solitude unique to the center of the world.
