This ballet-themed shoot of Rei Ayanami, from purchasing costumes to trimming the wig, was done personally step by step, taking nearly a month for overall preparation. The outfit chosen is a white ballet dress made of multi-layered tulle overlay, with the blue satin ribbon at the waist and the choker serving as the finishing touches, perfectly echoing Rei Ayanami's classic blue hair in Neon Genesis Evangelion. The white pantyhose were specially selected as a slightly translucent style, presenting a delicate skin texture under cool lighting, matched with pink ribboned pointe shoes to make the leg lines appear more slender in front of the lens. The wig was trimmed with very wispy layers; the positions of the bangs and sideburns were adjusted several times to fit her cold yet pure temperament, and feather hair accessories were added to the top of the head for embellishment. The makeup emphasized pale skin tone and red pupils, using light pink blending for the eye makeup matched with nude lipstick, trying hard not to disrupt the overall cold vibe. To fit the character setting, the eyebrows were also intentionally trimmed flatter, making the overall facial contour look more serene.
On the shooting day, the venue was covered with white feathers, which were actually a bit slippery to step on, requiring extra caution during positioning. To restore the posture of a ballet dancer, hard ballet pointe shoes were worn. These shoes are really punishing to the feet, especially during single-leg standing actions where toe pain is excruciating and a slight shift in the center of gravity leads to instability, but for the sake of the visual effect, I gritted my teeth and held on. The photographer's lighting arrangement was very dedicated; the background projection and cool-toned light gave the frame somewhat of a theatrical feel. The falling feathers were manually scattered on-site, requiring burst shooting synchronized with shutter speed to get a satisfactory shot after dozens of attempts. Fans were also turned on on-site to create the effect of feathers suspended in the air, filling the entire studio with flying fluff. After communicating the general composition ideas with the photographer, we first test-shot sitting postures to find the feel, and then challenged high-difficulty standing actions. To capture the best instant of falling feathers, the photography assistant continuously adjusted the fan's angle on the side, trying many times to get the most satisfactory falling trajectory.
This time I tried sitting postures and dynamic airborne movements, and the one I'm most satisfied with is the posture of raising one leg backward, where the stretching of the body and the arc of the skirt hem were just right. The combination of ballet and the character Rei Ayanami gave me a feeling of being both fragile and resilient. Her very existence carries a silent power; without needing too many expressions, standing quietly is full of story. While posing, I kept recalling Rei Ayanami's state of almost zero emotional fluctuation, hiding all strength in body language and conveying tension through taut insteps and extended arms.
Although the process was tiring, seeing the finished photos gave me a real sense of achievement. From muscle exertion in movements to expression control, and matching the scene's light and shadow, the elegance behind ballet is actually a dual test of muscles and willpower. My leg muscles were sore for several days after the shoot, but being able to present another side of Rei Ayanami from Neon Genesis Evangelion through this form made all the effort feel completely worthwhile. The finished photos retain some coldness and alienation, interpreting the character's inner world through body lines, and I hope everyone likes this different way of expression.
