This Ayanami Rei custom design shoot was mainly intended to pull her into everyday life scenarios. Since I've mostly done plugsuit versions in the past, this time I wanted to try a route of daily winter casual wear. The wig took about two days to trim, focusing on the layering of the bangs and overall fluffiness; it shouldn't lie too flat against the scalp, otherwise it looks too rigid. The light blue short hair (Blue hair cosplay style) paired with a pair of thin-rimmed glasses was meant to enhance the character's inherent sense of detachment and scholarly air, but paired with the white high-neck sweater and blue-and-white plaid pleated skirt, the overall vibe becomes much softer.
The scarf was intentionally chosen in a matching plaid pattern, which is not only practical for warmth but also visually adds layering to the outfit. The black shoulder bag and black loafers echo each other from top to bottom, with white Stockings acting as a transition, nicely shaping the leg lines and making the visual center of gravity more stable. In terms of makeup, the eye makeup is kept very light, focusing on a translucent base and natural eyebrows, while the lips use a matte-textured bean-paste color, which pairs with the glasses without being overpowering.
The shooting day was chosen on a street filled with everyday atmosphere. The sunlight was fantastic, shining through the gaps in the leaves and forming beautiful mottled light and shadows. This natural light has more of a everyday feel than flat studio lighting. To match this environment, I made some adjustments to my poses: feet slightly pigeon-toed, hands gesturing near the ears, presenting a playful vibe of being inadvertently caught on camera. Ayanami Rei's emotions are relatively restrained in the original work, so in this custom design, I hoped to show her state after having an ordinary person's life through a slight smile and relaxed posture. The gaze wasn't deliberately posed for the lens, but maintained a quiet immersion in her own world.
When shooting, communicating with the photographer, to retain the afternoon's airy feel, the aperture was set relatively wide, the background vehicles were blurred, and enough space was left in the composition so the light and shadows on the ground extended as part of the foreground. The car covered with a car cover on the right became a great dark background, echoing the gray car body on the left in the foreground and background, preventing the frame from looking empty. The temperature that day was actually rather low, but because the white sweater was quite thick and coupled with the scarf, the physical sensation during the shoot was okay. The white Stockings were chosen in a slightly supportive, pressurized style so the leg lines could appear slimmer and more symmetrical before the lens. A lot of dynamic moments were captured on-site; most of the time I was walking back and forth or adjusting my scarf, actions that are much more vivid than a stiff standing pose.
Regarding custom designs, I've always felt it's not deviating from the character, but exploring more possibilities based on the character's personality. This photo set abandons the plugsuit and mecha elements, blending in a winter everyday feel, where the cool and warm tones of blue collide into a unique coolness. During post-processing, we intentionally retained the skin's real texture and the environmental light-and-shadow contrast, without excessive skin smoothing, to emphasize the realistic feel of this set. From wig styling to the selection of clothing materials, the entire process was constantly adjusted to find the effect closest to my vision, which tests not only the understanding of the character, but also the control over styling and light and shadow.
