[Rei Ayanami Cosplay] Exquisite Light and Shadow in EVA's Ruined Classroom

Deciding to shoot at this abandoned school building in Shanghai was driven purely by a desire for extreme desolation and an authentic apocalyptic atmosphere. I have to admit, the level of abandonment at the location was even more hardcore than expected—the graffiti on the blackboards and wooden floor debris everywhere carried a rich texture steeped in time. The moment we stepped inside, damp dust and a pungent moldy odor filled the air, combined with Shanghai's signature steamy summer heat, causing sweat to pour uncontrollably almost immediately. I originally thought if my body could endure the muggy heat it would be fine, but the biggest enemy turned out to be mosquitoes, which treated us like a full-blown feast. Even though I sprayed half a bottle of repellent before leaving, any exposed skin was targeted with pinpoint accuracy. Between shots, standing still was out of the question; I could only pace back and forth among the debris to relieve the unbearable combination of heat and itching.

Midway through the shoot, due to excessive sweating and severely poor air circulation, I suddenly felt intense dizziness and my vision turned black—classic signs of low blood sugar and heatstroke. I had to quickly find a relatively clean wooden board to sit on. Fortunately, I had hard candies and electrolyte drinks packed in my bag, and with my friend fanning me from the side, I slowly recovered. For a summer outdoor shoot, you should never overestimate your physical endurance; heat relief gear is an absolute must—portable fans, cooling wipes, and similar supplies shouldn't be spared, or things can easily go downhill.

Although my body suffered quite a bit, when looking at the raw preview photos on the photographer's camera, all the suffering felt completely worth it. The lighting conditions in this classroom were a serendipitous gift: afternoon sunlight poured diagonally through broken window frames, casting mottled geometric shapes onto the floor and wooden desks, illuminating dust everywhere and peeling walls with a cinematic quality that studio setups could never replicate. The character's light-colored hair created a striking visual contrast against the dark, decaying backdrop in this ruins portrait photography shoot under high-contrast lighting.

Being able to bring the character design into such a concrete real-world ruin actually created a marvelous resonance with the post-apocalyptic lingering traces of humanity in Neon Genesis Evangelion. Compared to clean studio backdrops, this wasteland style outdoor shoot filled with authentic graininess, dust, and decay gave the images a much heavier narrative weight. Outdoor shoots are grueling, but enduring the fatigue is entirely worth it for such surprise-filled final photos and natural light and shadow. Consider it a treasured piece of anime-style photography traded for buckets of sweat and mosquito bites. If I ever challenge a wasteland-style shoot again, autumn would definitely be a wiser choice.
