The thematic concept for this shoot was to place Rei Ayanami into a Livehouse stage environment. Completely different from her original image as a Neon Genesis Evangelion pilot, this outfit with hardcore punk elements relies on stage lighting and smoke to create an explosive visual atmosphere.
The silver sleeveless top is paired with a bowtie, together with plush-spliced denim shorts and massive blue leg sleeves, giving the overall look a strong sense of layering. The jacket is designed in a half-off draped style, with the plush edges and gray-silver inner piece presenting a metallic texture under the cool light. The contrasting red and blue belt and thigh straps, along with the addition of metal pants chains, not only serve a decorative purpose but also make the visual center of gravity of the styling more stable. Though it looks dashing, the suspenders and metal chains definitely add a lot of weight.
For the hairstyle, the iconic silver-blue short hair and hairpins were preserved. In coordination with the overall outfit, the makeup emphasizes the depth of the eyes to fit that cold stage aura without completely losing the character's original aloofness. The blue bass in my hands is the soul of this photo set. Paired with the drum kit and another electric guitar in the scene, it instantly maxes out the realism of a rock performance. On-site, we utilized high spotlights and smoke to create the Tyndall effect of stage backlighting. This high-angle backlighting not only brings a strong contrast between light and dark but also makes the movement of smoke in the air visible to the naked eye, resulting in very clean and sharp lines of light and shadow.
During the shooting process, posing in an outfit with straps and pants chains required a high level of flexibility. When making large movements while holding the bass, it was necessary to balance both the styling and the prop. As for the lighting, we intentionally let the top light pierce through the smoke onto the hair strands to outline a rim light, giving the frame more tension. This attempt to combine Rei Ayanami's cool traits with the band's vitality resulted in final light and shadow effects that are even more atmospheric than expected. Recreating an alternative trait of the character in a stage scene was a very special experience for this Anime cosplay photoshoot utilizing Stage backlit photography.
