Shooting this set of Kuro Rei cosplay at Chaodian earlier this year turned out with fantastic overhead lighting after sorting through the raw files, so here is a record of the photoshoot process. The fabric of this Glossy bodysuit is highly reflective, making putting it on, taking it off, and moving around quite exhausting, yet it perfectly aligned with the character's cold, form-fitting design aesthetic. Pairing it with the large scythe prop, the weight was genuinely substantial—especially when maintaining a pose with the blade resting on the ground while holding the long handle with one hand. It demanded considerable core strength, requiring constant adjustments to my center of gravity during posing to ensure flattering lines on camera.
Communicating with photographer DamaojinShuimu, our primary goal was to emphasize this emotion of cold detachment. We used very hard overhead lighting on set, which carved sharp reflective highlights across the chest and silver gloves, outlining the character's contours against the dark environment. During the shoot, I deliberately controlled the upward angle of my chin, keeping my gaze as vacant as possible while looking toward distant light sources, matching that mindset from the lines of not knowing what tears feel like. Even though the prop in hand was heavy, the entire presence needed to project a weightless, floating lightness to bring out that contrast.
During retouching, lines were not overly smoothed, preserving the natural wrinkles and highlights of the Glossy bodysuit itself, while the scene's shadows were deeply suppressed to retain that cold yet imposing theatrical atmosphere from the raw shots. From preparing the outfit and adjusting on-set positioning to fine-tuning light and shadow in post-processing, despite being a demanding process, seeing the final photos made all the effort worthwhile. This look features numerous details—including the green accent striping on the chest and the red-and-black palette—all striving to faithfully restore the design from Neon Genesis Evangelion. The studio environment was exceptionally fitting as well; the spacious, dark-toned setting was ideal for conveying the solitude of this Cosplay photography work.
