During this Firefly ACG Expo, I finally shot this set for Sunohara Kokona, her magical girl look from Blue Archive's Shanhaijing Academy. The details of the entire costume are very meticulously handled; the black-and-white striped small blazer combined with a large bright blue bow tie makes the visual center highly distinct. The animal ears on top of my head and the blue-and-black mini top hat hair accessory are key to recreating the character's charm.
The pairing of white stockings and black high heels makes the overall lines very sleek. When shooting outdoors, combined with the gray floor tiles and the greenery in the background, it beautifully accentuates the character's color scheme. The photographer, Orange Peel, paid great attention to perspective during framing; using a low-angle shot effectively elongated my leg lines, showcasing the character's playfulness and liveliness.
When posing while holding the star magic wand, it's important to control the upper body's center of gravity, especially in a single-leg standing posture where the core needs to be tightened to maintain stability. The crouching pose pointing forward tests your mastery of the distance from the lens; keeping a focused gaze gives the final photos more of a narrative feel.
Shooting under natural outdoor light heavily tests the texture of the makeup. To prevent reflections under strong light, I used a matte base makeup and enhanced the contouring around the eyes. The silver-white long straight wig required extra time to comb through during the shoot to prevent it from getting messy in the wind, and we prepared corresponding styling products on-site to handle any unexpected situations.
This look portrays a magical girl with a touch of tsundere and energetic vibes, so I leaned toward a relaxed approach to expression control, with a slight upturn at the corners of my mouth and keeping my gaze as clear and un-stiff as possible. The real-life shoot at the Guangzhou Anime Convention brought a fresh vitality; unlike a monotonous studio shoot, the dappled tree shadows and stone path in the background give the entire frame more breathing room.
I am genuinely happy to have completed this set of work in such great weather, and the shooting process went incredibly smoothly. Through the texture presentation of the costume fabrics and the meticulous attention to makeup and styling details, I tried my best to recreate the character's original charm. I hope everyone can feel the relaxed and joyful atmosphere brought by the combination of the costume and the scene, and special thanks to the photography team for all their hard work.
