[Rei Ayanami cosplay] The Unit-00 Pilot at the Yangpu Power Plant Site

Under this gigantic red steel framework at the Yangpu Power Plant Site, I completed this nighttime photoshoot of the Unit-00 pilot plugsuit. The raw, gritty feel of the industrial scene intertwined with the neon color palette is perfect for restoring the cold, heavy industrial mechanical aesthetic world-view of Neon Genesis Evangelion. The original plan was to capture the plugsuit's texture under artificial night light sources, but the lighting conditions on site were much more complex than imagined. The fill-light from the red gantry crane was incredibly intense, accompanied by the cold white light from distant streetlights and background buildings, creating a highly vivid color contrast. To highlight the silhouette of this white plugsuit, we needed to avoid top-light hitting the face directly as much as possible, utilizing the on-site H-beams and steel frameworks for positioning, allowing the body to step into the intersecting zones of light to generate a three-dimensional play of light and shadow.

The fabric texture of this plugsuit leans matte, but under partial intense lighting, it produces a slight whitish reflection, which is a definite plus for restoring the character's design setup. During the shoot, a large portion of energy was spent coordinating with the prop; the red spear in the frame serves as both the visual centerpiece and the extension line of the composition, requiring me to find an angle that felt both natural and powerful when holding it. Personally, I prefer the third frame, which is a dynamic snapshot with one leg raised. That sense of a moment suspended right before a command lands, paired with the stretched body proportions under the wide-angle lens, beautifully showcases the tactical techwear style unique to the plugsuit itself. For the close-ups, we leveraged a large aperture to completely diffuse the background neon into bokeh circles. At times like this, the focus shifts to conveying the figure's own internal emotion—the color contrast between the red irises and the white uniform feels both detached and harmonious within this blurred, warm-toned atmosphere.

Doing character portrayal photography in an industrial ruin presents its greatest challenge in safety and figuring out how to interact with the site's existing structures. For example, in the fifth photo where I sit leaning against the blue metal mesh grid, I chose this spot because the blue-toned light reflection from the railing itself happened to form a perfect complement to the red light in the broader environment. Honestly, the texture of concrete floors and metal treadplates isn't particularly comfortable for sitting, but to capture that atmosphere of a brief respite during combat intervals, I adjusted several orientations before finding a posture that could support the body without creating too many creases in the plugsuit. The transparent high-heeled boots weren't particularly stable on this hard ground either; many movements required constant attention to center-of-gravity control. As for expressing the so-called "sexy" elements, it primarily relies on the tight-fitting tailoring of the plugsuit itself to manifest the curves of the waist and legs, alongside the visual extension at the heels of the shoes; there's no need to force stereotypical poses, as a naturally erect, upright state is far more aligned with the cold, detached temperament of this character image.

The entire shooting process lasted roughly until the latter half of the night. The stillness of the park coupled with the occasional distant whistle of ships enhanced the immersive sense of "being inside an unknown facility." The difficulty in designing this outfit doesn't lie in the movements, but rather in how to convey the appropriate sense of distance and oppression using only the figure's expression and body alignment, without relying on too many background elements. Facing the camera, I tried to capture a micro-expression akin to "switching to standby mode," holding back any outward expression of emotion and instead contracting all energy within the tension of the muscles. For the final selected images, I intentionally avoided overly complex collages or typographic treatments, wishing to preserve the majestic, direct visual impact of the raw photo. The collision between the industrial decay and the futuristic plugsuit, rendered under the red and blue dual-toned lighting, gives the final cuts a sharp, cyberpunk-like sharpness. Stepping out of the character itself and looking at these photos from an Anime-style photography lover's perspective, the Yangpu Power Plant Site is indeed a spectacular, highly photogenic venue. That boundary line between real-world industrial ruins and fictional sci-fi settings is precisely the visual core this work wishes to express.
