[Reimu cosplay] Experiencing Touhou Project's Hakurei Shrine Indoors with 3D Modeling Photography

For this photoshoot, we opted directly for 3D modeling photography composite backgrounds, primarily to fulfill the creative vision of Reimu Hakurei at the Hakurei Shrine. Finding an authentic real-life equivalent location is difficult and often involves battling the outdoor elements. Therefore, we selected the 3D environment by @祁幻视界, completing the entire shoot indoors with full photography and post-production included, significantly eliminating outdoor travel hassles and providing a far more comfortable experience. The ensemble is a Japanese-style Lolita design; the red-and-white fabric boasts rich textures, complemented by intricate lace and tassel accents across the chest and cuffs. The oversized headpiece ornament and sheer tulle on the arms lend a delicate airiness, while the white paper streamers on the long-handled gohei prop provide the perfect finishing touch. Because the shooting method involved holding a smartphone for mirror selfies, framing and composition demanded greater precision. I relied primarily on light reflections in the mirror to modulate facial highlights and shadows, while balancing foreground decorative elements and skirt layers. Geta clogs look wonderful against stone pathways; when posing in front of the mirror, I paid close attention to ground alignment and tweaked my stance angles.

Throughout the process, I shared reference samples detailing the scene's color palette, cherry blossoms, and blue-purple lighting tones with the 3D modeler to ensure seamless environmental atmosphere, especially fine-tuning shadow brightness for natural integration. Fan-created photography has many solutions, and 3D modeling composites represent a mature and reliable technique capable of faithfully recreating the lore's distinctive ambiance. Communication went smoothly: since wardrobe and makeup were already authentic, post-production focused on blending ambient lighting with the character. Free from outdoor constraints, I could focus entirely on micro-expressions and posing. Lighting cast by lanterns onto the fabric was also meticulously adjusted. It was a completely stress-free experience, organically bridging the character's aura with the ethereal depth of the modeled backdrop.

The entire process was relaxed and joyful. This composite approach eliminates weather and venue uncertainties while delivering reliable results. Compared to exhausting outdoor shoots, this workflow transition made everything much easier. I kept my movements natural to evoke the relaxed sensation of casually strolling outside the shrine. Capturing mirror selfies required extra practice to ensure eye contact with the camera didn't look stiff, while minding fabric folds during movements. The faithfully rendered shrine background harmonized with the red-and-white dress, establishing strong foreground-to-background depth without feeling disconnected. This experience reaffirmed that great post-processing extends beyond face retouching to the harmonious coexistence of light and color. Overall, it was far more time- and energy-efficient than expected, achieving our envisioned aesthetic in a wonderful Touhou Project Anime-style photography endeavor.
