[Mage cosplay] A Mage Passing Through Chengdu Tianfu Red - Event photo sharing

Walking on the floor tiles wearing this multi-layered ruffled witch hat feels a bit magical, with the black platform shoes under my feet stepping onto the somewhat empty grounds of Chengdu Tianfu Red, every step carrying a solid texture. This isn't the main stage of some convention, but a section inside this building with a very modern industrial background. The horizontal silver metal ventilation ducts and white pillars interlace, softening the originally harsh indoor light quite a bit. Chuxya set up a few fill lights on-site, and the light and shadow fell on the folds of the white puffy skirt, completely bringing out the layers of lace and ruffles through highlights and shadows. Although there was no particularly complex background setup, utilizing this gray-and-white indoor architectural structure, combined with the camera's eye-level or slightly tilted framing, instead cleanly highlighted the details of the costume itself and the body tension of the character.

Speaking of this outfit, we actually spent quite a long time stuck on accessories during preparation. Apart from this black lace-up vest and the high-waisted skirt filled with intricate lace trim, the brown leather pouch at the waist is a vital tightening point, preventing the center of gravity of the entire skirt from floating completely upward. Of course, the most painstaking part was still the facial makeup and wig arrangement. This hat has an incredibly large diameter, and the brim edge not only has stiff white folds but also black lace trim on the inside acting as a visual transition. To wear it securely and keep it from losing balance when turning my head, I also used small clips to make hidden fixations. The long golden curls were not deliberately given that extremely puffy styling, but instead retained a natural sense of dynamic movement, which makes the captured moments blending movement and stillness look more natural.

In terms of props, holding this black hardcover book in my left hand, the thickness of the book just supports the posture of the upper body in the palm of my hand. My right hand grips that curved-handle wooden cane, which can form an extension line matching the body's tilt angle during walking. When shooting that picture, I tried to turn my body slightly, letting the broom rest by my leg; a light-colored bow is tied to the broom head made of straw stalks, which is the stablest place for the lower body's visuals. Playing a Mage cosplay style with obvious fan-made attributes requires not replicating the so-called 'absolute recreation', but rather finding a relaxed 'sense of character' in movements, letting those costume elements look not cumbersome at all when the limbs are extended.

Chengdu Tianfu Red is actually a pretty interesting place; its commercial space and ACG culture blend together very well, and you can often see heavily dressed enthusiasts. The timing of this visit was relatively close to the weekend; although the venue itself was in an operational state, we specially picked a slightly quieter corner to snapshot. For convention photos, there's no need to intentionally scramble for that crowded stage feel; utilizing its original, slightly cool-toned indoor light and rough architectural lines makes it much easier to yield good pictures. The photographer Chuxya was highly patient throughout the entire process, adjusting angles to both dodge the positions of the fire sprinkler heads overhead and utilize the live ambient light to complement the layers of my silhouette.

After shooting for most of the day, standing in platform shoes and loose slouch socks actually consumes quite a bit of physical strength, but the shade effect of this hat was unexpectedly good. Once I go back and export the photos from the memory card of this shooting round, I should be able to pick out some more unique composition angles. Different lighting angles bring a huge difference in texture; this time, we primarily preserved the combination of frontal light and side-backlight to present the texture of the skirt hem. Next time, if there is an opportunity to switch to a darker ambient background, maybe we can shoot a frame with a stronger cinematic feel to elevate our Anime-style photography.
