The original plan was to buy tickets to shoot in the hydrangeas, eagerly anticipating the final photo results. But upon arriving at the scene, vibrant hydrangeas of various colors blanketed the area, and wearing this Genshin Impact Lynette Lily of the Valley Waltz outfit felt off no matter how I looked at it. Walking around the flower beds twice, I constantly felt the multicolored flowers washed out the color of my skirt and completely distracted from the subject. We had no choice but to relocate spontaneously to a small wooded grove right beside the hydrangeas. Even though the admission fee was basically wasted, looking at the photos now, this lush green background proved to be the most fitting choice after all.
Speaking of the difficulties of Outdoor photography, outdoor shoots are far harder than convention hall photography. At conventions, you can control the lighting yourself, but outdoor light and shadow depend entirely on the weather. Sunlight filtering through the leaves created countless dappled shadows, so finding the right light and angle kept us shifting back and forth for quite some time. Catching dynamic movement was another challenge: the skirt hem and long ribbons were heavily affected by the wind, relying almost entirely on candid captures, which was strenuous for the photographer as well. Because of the dense foliage in the woods, mosquitoes and bugs were inevitable. Wearing a short skirt with bare legs made me an easy target, so I had to carefully track time to reapply bug spray.
Shooting with a voluminous skirt requires repeatedly readjusting one's stance because the ground in the woods is uneven, littered with tree roots and fallen leaves where a misstep could twist an ankle. Looking back on the shoot, the photographer guided me from various angles on using side backlighting to emphasize the fabric texture of the dress and the translucency of the animal ears, coordinating them with that blue ribbon. Whipping the ribbon to create an arc looks easy, but chasing that perfect parabolic curve took numerous attempts, swinging my arms over and over. If my arm strength weren't decent, I probably wouldn't have been able to keep it raised. It also consumed a lot of energy, as every toss shifted my entire center of gravity; maintaining an effortless, light posture while doing so was genuinely exhausting.
Even though the process was demanding, seeing the final results of this Lynette Cosplay makes all that hardship feel worthwhile. The translucent texture of the blue pleated skirt under the forest backlighting, paired with the beast tail and flowing long hair, created effects that are almost impossible to achieve in an indoor studio. In particular, the soft, blurry halo cast by the light piercing through the treetops matched the 2D aesthetic of this Lily of the Valley Waltz look surprisingly well.
All in all, plans often get upended by circumstances, but unexpected detours during a shoot also harbor delightful surprises. This experience showed me that picking the right environment can yield results far superior to initial expectations, making it a truly enriching photography journey.
