[Firefly cosplay] Honkai: Star Rail, moments of light and shadow in a custom design cosplay look

For this custom design cosplay of Firefly from Honkai: Star Rail, during conceptualization I wanted not only to restore the character's original spirit, but also to endow her with a real sense of vitality in a real-world setting. Preparing these two photo sets actually took a lot of effort, especially regarding wig handling and costume styling considerations.

First and most eye-catching is this white wig. The white base paired with blue gradient tips was a combination I finalized after repeatedly picking through numerous wig fibers. To make the waves look natural rather than stiff, I made high-temperature styling adjustments twice before achieving these soft wavy curves. The black bow and cyan-blue butterfly wing decorations on the side of the head, paired with that small geometric hair patch accessory, serve as the visual anchor for this styling; plus, the white pom-pom embellishments make the head styling both fluffy and layered. To fit the character's skin tone traits, I chose light purple contact lenses while accentuating lash definition and adding a delicate red blush at the outer eye corners, making her gaze look even more endearing.

For the first outfit, I chose a semi-transparent lace round fan as a prop. Because the prop is so light and delicate, I had to pay extra attention to holding force and positioning during the shoot to let the streamers underneath drape naturally. For this outfit, I chose an elegant color scheme of off-white and pale green, using lightweight fabric with subtle patterns; combined with lantern sleeves at the cuffs and layered ruffles, it creates a classical and airy artistic vibe. The shoot took place against a backdrop with traditional wooden lattices and benches under very soft light with no harsh shadows—this gentle atmosphere of light and shadow matched the serene temperament brought by the clothing perfectly.

The second outfit gave off a completely different feel. Since I personally love Lolita-style dresses, the second look experimented with a combination of pure white lace and floral elements. 3D roses in pink and pale green were arranged tastefully across the lace trimming on the chest, while the off-the-shoulder sleeves were also covered in lace, creating very rich visual layers. This dress demands high standards for tailoring: the off-the-shoulder cut nicely showcases collarbone lines, while the fluffy skirt and flower ornaments at the waist make body proportions look sleeker. The weather on the day of the shoot was fantastic, with outdoor sunlight penetrating red flower clusters to form lovely bokeh spots. My idea at the time was to capture a sweet, vibrant feel akin to a spring outing, so my poses were more relaxed—raising arms slightly with naturally curved fingers to blend seamlessly into the floral background.

I really love the concept of custom design cosplay because it means that while retaining the character's core temperament, cosplayers can infuse their own understanding and aesthetics. These subtle differences actually allow the character to show a more diverse side. In this shoot, I deliberately preserved plenty of natural light without excessive softening, hoping the photos would present a realistic effect with a breathable feel. From photo selection to post-processing, I hope to present these two looks across different outfits and scenes completely to everyone. This attempt to bridge 2D anime into reality via Anime-style photography is precisely what fascinates me about cosplay. During preparation, whether it's trimming the white wig, positioning accessories, or managing garment fold directions, balancing aesthetics with camera angles is an ongoing journey of learning and progress for me as a cosplayer.
