The location for this shoot was chosen in a hall featuring classical statues and a black high-backed sofa. To align with the setting of Sakiko Toyokawa from Arknights, I deliberately put together this dark Gothic Lolita outfit. From finalizing the makeup to setting up the venue, every single step underwent repeated adjustments, aiming to faithfully recreate that aloof, cool, and mysterious atmosphere.
A great deal of thought went into the costume. A black lace top was paired with laced sleeve covers, while the lower body featured black-and-white striped Stockings combined with black high-heeled boots accented by white bows. The black demon horns atop the head serve as the crowning touch of the entire look, which, together with the light blue wig and blue-gray contact lenses, brings out an extraordinary, otherworldly coolness. The makeup emphasized under-eye blush and metallic eyeshadow, making facial contours appear more three-dimensional under cool-toned lighting.
The on-site lighting primarily utilized cool blue-violet tones. These lights fell across the white classical statues on both sides and the black leather sofa, creating a stark visual contrast. To project that aura of haughtiness and mystery in the frame, I experimented extensively with posing. In the first shot, I chose to sit upright in the center of the sofa with legs crossed, one hand resting on the knee, and gaze fixed straight into the lens. This not only grounded the composition with stability but also beautifully showcased the leg contours and garment details. The second shot was more languid, draping both legs horizontally across the armrest while leaning slightly back, utilizing wide-angle lens perspective to give the image greater dynamic tension.
The silver-gray floral props and dried leaves on the floor enriched the visual depth of the scene. Throughout the shoot, we continuously adjusted the light source angles, using rim lighting from the side and rear to outline the subject's silhouette and avoid the flatness of front lighting. Walking around in these high-heeled boots certainly demanded strong balance, and maintaining that aristocratic poise on the high-backed chair required holding the same posture for extended periods. Although it was tiring, seeing the resulting shots on screen made every moment worthwhile. The tilted black picture frame and the flowers scattered on the floor were designed to break up monolithic compositions and enhance depth. As a cosplayer who frequently shoots this dark Gothic Lolita aesthetic, I know that body language often conveys character personality far more effectively than facial expressions alone—for instance, pointing the instep tautly or the subtle bend of the fingers can infuse the frame with palpable tension. During post-processing color grading, I preserved the chilly sharpness of the blue lighting while slightly stopping down ambient illumination to make the central subject pop. The overall photo set delivered exceptional texture, achieving the exact dramatic tension I had envisioned.
