Bringing this Jade Rabbit-themed Lolita coordinate from concept to final deliverables took over half a month of dedicated preparation. Because it coincided perfectly with the Mid-Autumn Festival, both the wardrobe and the Studio set were infused with rich traditional festive aesthetics.
First, touching upon the costume nuances: the dress features a bright yellow and pale gold color palette draped beneath an ethereal layer of sheer tulle, with densely structured lace detailing along the cuffs and skirt hem. To embody the 'mooncake bunny' concept, I hand-stitched three-dimensional rabbit ears edged with a halo of pearls, accented by fluffy white pom-poms to evoke bunny paws and tails. Delicate floral appliqués and bowknots adorned the bodice, requiring extreme care when dressing to avoid snagging the lace. The sheer White stockings were patterned with miniature bow prints, paired with white block-heeled Mary Janes that lengthened leg lines while providing steady footing on the wooden floor.
The Studio set construction was executed with meticulous care. The backdrop centered on a colossal luminous glowing moon, flanked on both sides by cascading warm yellow gauze drapes and traditional Chinese paper lanterns. To infuse organic vitality into the frame, bright yellow faux flowering branches trailed in from the edges. The floorboards were lightly misted with water to harness glossy specular reflections and deepen spatial layers. Lighting relied primarily on warm-toned side-backlights to carve out fabric textures and accessory contours, while the warm lantern glow served as ambient accents, enveloping the scene in a cozy, dreamy mood.
The shooting process was far more physically demanding than expected. Wearing structurally supported rabbit ears subtly shifted the head's center of gravity, necessitating realignment every few takes. To highlight the skirt's voluminous layers and elongated leg lines, the photographer directed seated, reclining, and dynamic standing poses. For instance, the final frame required lifting the skirt hem while balancing on one leg—any slip in core stability immediately introduced wobbles while trying to maintain serene facial composure. Moving around also required caution to navigate floor reflectors safely. Despite the exhausting maneuvers, the final payoff was breathtaking, with the watery floor reflections breathing vibrant life into the frames.
For makeup, I selected warm orange-pink hues tailored to the theme, accentuating the aegyo-sal and lash volume. Paired with long pale-blonde curls, this sculpted a porcelain, doll-like refinement. In post-color grading, we deliberately preserved the chromatic tension between the warm lanterns and the cool luminous moon without heavy airbrushing, keeping the tactile richness of the fabric and setting intact. Tackling such ornate styling is a test of stamina and patience, but translating an imagined vision into reality makes the journey deeply rewarding.
