Today's outdoor shoot was set right in a vast sunflower field. Wearing a large-brimmed black hat, the white ruffled lining was specially secured with clips beforehand to hold its shape; otherwise, such a wide brim easily gets blown out of form by the wind outdoors. Paired with Blonde hair wavy curls and a thick side braid, the overall color scheme was locked into black, white, and yellow, perfectly matching today's scene. The costume is a classic black-and-white pinafore dress with double-breasted gold buttons on the front and multi-layered irregular hems. When running or jumping, the skirt spreads out with a wonderful flare, complemented by white short socks and black leather shoes to complete the overall styling.
The biggest challenge for this shoot was the harsh midday sunlight. To keep the frames clean under direct sun, the camera parameters were set to ISO 100, aperture F2.8, and shutter speed cranked to 1/1250s or even 1/2500s. The wide aperture effectively blurred the dense sunflowers and distant crowds in the background, locking the visual focus entirely onto myself. Although the finished photos look bright and cheerful, repeatedly jumping and adjusting poses under the scorching sun—striving to keep my eyes wide open without squinting while maintaining the character's lively, slightly mischievous grin—was quite physically demanding.
To prevent the frames from looking monotonous, I brought along a broom and a few sunflower props. Posing with the broom held aloft on the field pathways, or squatting among the blossoms holding a sunflower, the props gave the otherwise static scenery a sense of storytelling. Midway through the shoot, on a sudden whim, I planned to pluck two sunflowers as trophies. Just as I picked out the most flourishing bloom and before my fingers could even touch the stem, I was caught red-handed by the flower field's owner (the flower mom mentioned in the post). Chased and poked several times with an umbrella, I had no choice but to scurry home carrying my broom. Looking back now, this 'evil Marisa' vibe paired with the failed flower-heist adventure gave the whole set an amusing behind-the-scenes backstory.
When shooting on location in a flower field, besides insect repellent, the skirt hem is very prone to picking up mud, so one needs to step extra carefully. Additionally, if you plan to shoot jumping actions, putting anti-slip tape on the soles is recommended because the soil in flower fields is quite loose. With the vast expanse of orange-yellow blooms and Sea of sunflowers as a backdrop, the color saturation is extremely high; post-processing barely needed any color adjustment, as the raw shots out of camera retained vivid contrast. Although there were little hiccups during the shoot, the visual clash of the black-and-white dress against the flower sea turned out truly satisfying.
