Taking advantage of the clear weather right at the tail end of the sunflower season, I brought this Medicine Melancholy ensemble into a vibrant Sea of sunflowers. The sunlight was brilliant and quite harsh, but fortunately, the sunflowers were in peak bloom, offering high-saturation backdrops from virtually any angle. This Touhou Project coordinate features a classic black-and-red color scheme that stands out spectacularly in outdoor photography.
The top is black with a white lace Peter Pan collar, accented across the chest by a burgundy velvet ribbon bow adorned with a golden metallic crucifix pendant. The puff sleeves are edged with delicate red lace trim. The bottom is paired with a deep crimson velvet pleated skirt. To complete the silhouette, I wore an oversized deep-red ribbon bow on my head edged with lace, shaped almost like fluttering wings. Although this headpiece is lightweight, the slightest draft among the flowers tended to tilt it, requiring constant angle adjustments between takes.
To complement the dress, I styled the lower half with white lace-trimmed socks and black platform Mary Janes. Navigating dirt trails and thick foliage in platform shoes was quite demanding, requiring continuous balance checks to avoid tripping on the hemline or slipping. The wig is a short golden wavy bob with straight blunt bangs, which held its texture beautifully under intense daylight. For makeup, I accentuated the blue contact lenses and eye contours, dusting heavier blush right beneath the eyes to sculpt the facial profile against the vibrant yellow sunflowers.
Outdoor photography places the greatest demands on managing light and physical stamina. Harsh midday overhead sun cast deep shadows, while the flower petals and leaves created strong specular glare. To create organic interaction between the character and the sunflowers, I held a sunflower prop close to my cheek, using the blossom to partially diffuse direct overhead rays—softening facial blowouts and carving out natural, gentle shadows. For the rear shots, standing at the edge of the path through the field allowed expansive sunflowers to fill the left frame, with distant trees and structures providing scenic depth. Posing centered and angled slightly to the side let the skirt drape naturally, clearly showcasing the Lolita silhouette alongside leg lines.
Even with White stockings, brushing through dense flower bushes risked snags from coarse leaves, so every step had to be measured. In the summer heat, base makeup and wig styling required vigilant maintenance, calling for several rounds of touch-ups and hair re-smoothing. For outdoor sessions, I always carry a reflector; even when handling it solo, finding the right tilt helps soften facial light significantly. Because the velvet fabric is relatively heavy, walking under the sun quickly induced perspiration, making hydration essential.
Catching this field of sunflowers in full bloom was an unexpected delight. This Touhou Project styling is remarkably suited for nature settings saturated with bold colors, where the black-and-red palette forges an arresting visual contrast against sunny yellow blossoms. Perfecting poses and smoothing styling during outdoor shoots always tests one's patience, yet seeing the vivid frames on the camera screen makes every ounce of effort worthwhile. This shoot leaves behind a wonderfully radiant memory for the summer.
