[Kaenbyou Rin Cosplay] Holding a Skull Cat, Freezing Moments at a Touhou Convention

Arriving at the shooting scene of the Touhou convention, before the foot traffic fully built up in the venue, I quickly finished shooting this set of Kaenbyou Rin convention photos. Actually, this spacious indoor venue is very suitable for shooting Gothic style cosplay characters. With natural light coming from the top combined with the convention's industrial-style ceiling, simply desaturating the background a bit in post-production creates a strong stage feel. I really love this outfit. The wig features bright red braided twin tails paired with black cat ear headpieces, fitting the character's playful yet mysterious aura wonderfully. For makeup, the focus was on the contrast between eye makeup and lip color, wearing light-colored contact lenses to enhance the piercing gaze. I'm quite satisfied with the overall faithful texture.

Speaking of the outfit, this gothic off-shoulder dress had a lot of thought put into its material selection and craftsmanship. The blue-green main fabric shows a great luster under convention spotlights, while the outer black lace and tulle offer clear layers, with delicate trims along the edges giving the outfit a substantial feel. The black choker around the neck adorned with a red gemstone creates a nice top-to-bottom echo. Paired with black platform Mary Jane shoes and sheer black tights, it not only elongates the visual proportion of the lower body but also perfectly matches the dark yet sweet overall tone. With the photographer's help, the first pose sitting on a high stool was mainly to highlight the interaction with the skull prop; holding the prop with both hands creates a more reserved look.

However, I personally recommend the second large-scene photo sitting on the ground, which is my favorite moment from this shoot. This shot fully displays the visual effect of the blue-and-black skirt spreading out over the concrete floor. Furthermore, the natural cross-legged pose sitting forward comfortably showcases the details of the black tights outfit and shoes, while casually tweaking the cat ear headpiece with my right hand gives off a relaxed yet composed character feel. The white skull sitting beside me doesn't look out of place; instead, it serves as a brilliant visual focal point. The angle chosen here is a slight high-angle shot, which captures the reflective texture of the floor. Though fellow fans passed by and stopped to watch, staying in character was the key to shooting.

In post-processing, we intentionally kept the high saturation of our main subject's red hair and blue dress, while turning the background hall ceiling and floor into black, white, and gray noise-reduced tones. This editing style works great for Touhou convention photos: once the background becomes monochrome, it not only reduces chaotic environmental interference but also makes the character's color contrast pop, naturally drawing visual focus to the character and props. As a Touhou Project fan, being able to attentively cosplay Kaenbyou Rin at a Touhou convention full of fellow enthusiasts is an absolute joy in itself.

There were plenty of behind-the-scenes moments, like awkwardly bumping into things while hauling the large skull prop, or the small episode of touching up the hairline after wind messed up the wig, but these all became fun memories of the convention. This look had a high photo return rate at the event, and I'm very grateful to the photographers for capturing Kaenbyou Rin from various angles. Whether it's the gothic skirt or the details of the black tights outfit with platform shoes, this styling is truly recognizable. That's all for today's Touhou convention photos share!
