Shooting this set of Blue Archive Marie cosplay in a gymnastics uniform focused on capturing the character's slightly youthful, innocent athletic charm. For this shoot, we chose a very down-to-earth setting—a utility storage room—utilizing the warm light filtering through the window blinds to craft the atmosphere.
For costume preparation, the core of this gymnastics uniform is a white short-sleeved sport tee with blue trim, paired with the iconic orange lanyard and ID badge hanging at the chest, and deep blue sporty skirt bottoms. The pleats and fabric of the skirt needed to stay crisp and structured to create natural tension in seated poses. The white stockings (over-the-knee socks) serve as one of the visual focal points of the entire look; the white socks not only brighten the colors of the lower body in the frame, but also flatter the leg shape nicely. Combined with the wooden shelves and a casual cross-legged seated pose, they make the leg lines appear even more elongated.
For the wig, I used long straight orange-amber hair, fine-tuned at the ends to prevent tangling, with the white animal ears on top serving as the soul of the character. To fit the casual everyday feel of the gymnastics uniform, I tilted the animal ears slightly to give them a livelier, more dynamic look. In terms of makeup, I focused on the eyes, selecting blue colored contact lenses to match, while keeping the base makeup fresh and translucent to reflect the porcelain fair complexion of 2D characters.
We used two compositional approaches during the shoot. The first was a close-up shot focusing on facial expressions, the white stockings, and the lines of the legs. This composition immediately captures the viewer's visual focus with a tight crop, placing the subject solidly in the center of the frame with a relaxed expression exuding ease and languor. The second was a wide-angle full shot where storage bins, traffic cones, and storage lockers introduced unmistakable slice-of-life marks. The wide-angle perspective exaggerated the foreground props, crafting an authentic sense of being inside a storage room. Switching from close-ups to wider perspectives fully showcased the character's charm across diverse angles.
For lighting, we relied primarily on natural light or simulated natural light. Side-backlight streaming in from the right illuminated the cheek contours and hair edges, creating beautiful rim lighting while casting distinct shadows across the blinds and walls behind. This contrast of light and shadow greatly enhanced the dimensional depth of the image, while the warm amber tones gave the entire set a cozy afternoon warmth perfectly suited to the girlish gymnastics uniform theme.
In terms of posing details, because we shot on wooden shelves, I had to adjust my seated posture to prevent wardrobe issues with the skirt while carefully monitoring the visual gap between the white stockings and the skirt hem to ensure comfortable proportions. Letting hands drape naturally or rest loosely beside the legs and making gentle eye contact with the camera conveyed an effortless, approachable warmth without deliberate posing.
There are truly many nuances worth refining when shooting such characters—such as neckline proportions, sleeve tightness, and the contrast between white athletic socks and skin tone. When gathering props, we specifically sourced clutter that fit the character's context; while not an ornate studio set, this slightly messy storage space felt all the more authentic and grounded. Through this photoshoot, I gained an even deeper appreciation for the expressive power of everyday sporty themes in cosplay. The key to presenting this gymnastics uniform lies in mastering pure, authentic athleticism.
