To bring this Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion CC Qipao cosplay photoshoot to life, we specifically chose a classical garden featuring a Lotus pond exterior in full bloom. It happened to drizzle on shoot day, which added significant difficulty but also brought an unexpected sophistication through Rainy scene photography. Raindrops danced across lotus leaves while distant ancient architecture appeared and vanished through the misty haze, producing a strong visual clash between red and green. To honor the immortal and ageless concept, I spent a long time searching for this red qipao—printed with large white peonies and golden patterns, featuring retro frog fasteners and high-slit cuts that preserved classical Chinese beauty while allowing dynamic movement during the shoot.
During shooting, I held a red oiled-paper umbrella and a folding fan, hunting for angles amidst the falling drizzle. To cut through the centuries-old gravity of the character, we introduced the playful interaction of eating candied hawthorns in the fourth shot; the high-slit qipao naturally accentuated leg contours, while black safety shorts prevented wardrobe slips and added a modern edge. For an even more relaxed pose, I slipped off one shoe to rest barefoot against the stone veranda—the contrast between bare skin and red-and-black heels served as an unconventional, rule-breaking touch.
"Ageless and immortal, witnessing the bloom and wither across the entire pond." This phrase served as the emotional foundation of this photoshoot. The blooming and fading of lotuses lasts but a fleeting season, yet for her, it reflects centuries of endless reunions and farewells. The qipao remains while departed companions leave no trace; thus, when facing the lens, I spent most of the time adjusting the focus of my gaze, avoiding overly bubbly expressions to preserve a serene sense of detachment. Yet occasionally snapping open the folding fan or looking down at the lotus in hand, that chilly poise and subtle, almost imperceptible helplessness were the exact moments I wanted to capture.
The greatest test during the shoot was sitting on the wet stone slab in a high-slit qipao while maintaining an elegant posture. The rain made the stone surface slippery, demanding core stability to hold the pose while balancing the graceful drape of the hemline and the extension of leg lines. The long wig tangled far more easily in the damp air; after every take, my stylist rushed over to comb through the tresses and refresh my makeup. While the rain reduced available light and forced slower shutter speeds, this soft diffused daylight imparted a natural, glowing texture to the skin. Looking toward the camera past the edge of the oiled-paper umbrella as raindrops blurred the background crowd, it truly felt as if I were standing in the chasm where time and space cross over.
Post-processing for this set avoided heavy-handed grading, prioritizing the vivid contrast between the emerald green of the lotus leaves and the true red of the qipao, while subtly pulling down background luminance to enhance visual depth. The red tassels and hair ornaments on the props appeared even more vibrant against the dark stone pillars. After wrapping a long day of shooting, despite physical fatigue, seeing that subtle trace of human warmth preserved amidst an aura of destiny in the final frames made every effort truly worthwhile.
