This time, I decided to try completing this set of Touhou Project character cosplay photoshoots in a rainy environment.
Looking at the initial styling, the iconic light blue short hair was paired with a large bowknot hair accessory of the same color scheme to serve as the visual anchor. For the outfit, a light blue and white gradient layered dress style was chosen, and the eye-catching red bow tie at the neckline is a brilliant detail of the entire attire. To fit the character theme, multi-faceted ice crystal texture special effect wings were worn on the back, presenting a translucent refractive effect under the wet light, beautifully coordinating with the overall cool temperament.
The location was chosen in a bamboo forest after the rain, where verdant bamboo leaves and blue hydrangeas blooming wildly along the stone path formed a very pure natural background. The first photo utilizes a transparent umbrella as a prop, capturing a snapshot looking back in the rain, which naturally integrates the character's ethereal feel with the environment, preserving a quiet sense of beauty. The last two photos switched to more expressive movements, such as a playful pose of jumping into mid-air on one leg and pointing a single finger toward the sky, which perfectly conveys the character's inherently lively and confident personality traits for this bamboo forest photoshoot.
Shooting outdoors in a rainy scene photography session indeed poses a significant challenge to equipment and hair/makeup styling. It requires constantly clearing water stains on the lens and taking care to protect the wig from being messed up by the heavy rain. To capture the best state of the frame, the photographer made the most of the ambient diffuse reflection light without using extra artificial light sources. This soft light beautifully preserved the lace and ruffle details of the skirt hem. During post-processing, to highlight the humid breath after the rain, I deliberately lowered the overall contrast and fine-tuned the green of the bamboo forest and the blue of the hair, making the image present a faint cool-light texture humming with moisture.
Because of weaving between the ground and wet plants, the skirt hem and socks of this costume inevitably ended up covered in mud and water. However, seeing the sparkling, refreshing water effect in the final photos made all the hard work feel completely worth it. Combined with the real vegetation around and the humid air, the sense of immersion throughout the entire shoot was incredibly strong. For friends who want to capture a similar natural fairytale atmosphere, although shooting on rainy days is troublesome, as long as you do good protection work, the resulting images are often more enduringly beautiful than those on sunny days, and the lighting texture is truly special for a cosplay project.
