Bringing out this Zhen Hai qipao outfit for a shoot is all about confidence and comfort. Since I happen to be free today, I changed into this attire to take a few pictures in my room, which serves as a sort of status update for friends who have been looking forward to this cosplay.
To be honest, the details of this outfit might not be obvious from afar, but they are highly captivating up close. The dominant black tone paired with golden tassels and frog closure elements, along with some hollow-out and asymmetrical cuts on the upper body, adds a touch of sharpness and Anime-style fashion texture to the originally dignified qipao. To fit the character's disposition, I specially prepared a hair accessory with large black flowers and string pearls. Combined with long straight hair, the visual accuracy is basically spot on.
In terms of accessories, the long black tulle gloves are the perfect finishing touch. With dark nails on the fingertips, the visual feedback when holding props is excellent. This fan with black fluff and long tassels in my hand serves as a display prop and can also rest naturally on my hand when posing, adding layers to the movements.
For the shoot, I chose to do mirror reflection self-portraits indoors. Although mirror shooting tests the composition, it indeed allows one to directly see how the outfit looks on the body. Honestly, covering the face with a phone is a natural drawback of selfies. To avoid the phone cutting through the frame, I had to spend some thought on finding angles—like turning sideways, kneeling on one knee, or lying prone while propping up a pillow to adjust the body lines.
Black high heels paired with black stockings is basically the formula for this look. It elongates the leg-to-body ratio and unifies the overall color tone into black and gray primary colors. Personally, I feel that black-themed cosplay looks mainly depend on having a sense of depth in the blacks instead of just being completely black from top to bottom. Therefore, the tassels on the clothes, the large flower hair accessory, and the reflections on the phone case all keep the overall image from looking rigid.
Bringing a character to life isn't just about wearing the clothes; it's about conveying the character traits through every little detail. Although the props and costume prepared for this casual cosplay are not particularly complex, the combined effect has already exceeded expectations.
