This set of photos for the Honor of Kings Dolia - Steed of Oasis cosplay is finally out! I'll share my thoughts on the early preparation and the shooting process here. The overall style of this look is a very typical exotic fantasy style. With sapphire blue as the main tone, it incorporates a large amount of pearls, gold borders, and sapphire elements, completely shattering my conventional perception of the game character. As a cosplayer, every time I get a design chart like this, it feels highly challenging.
First, in terms of costume preparation, the details of this outfit are highly sophisticated. The sapphire blue short dress isn't just a simple patchwork of fabrics; its edges and the chest area are adorned with a lot of golden embroidery and geometric patterns, giving it a strong texture. What concerned me the most was actually the headpiece design: a golden forehead ornament inlaid with sapphires, coupled with a layer of light blue veil behind it, immediately gives the character's head profile a strong sense of storytelling. To match this mysterious temperament, I specially wore corresponding sapphire chokers and armbands; these small accessories are the key to the final photos.
As for the choice of shooting location, the photographer specially found a studio with a strong ethnic flavor. As you can see, the hanging bead curtains and wooden lattices in the background, paired with the red-orange ethnic style carpet spread on the floor, form a very strong warm-and-cool contrast with the cold, airy blue clothing on my body. This contrast makes it very easy to yield great results during post-color grading, preventing the entire set of photos from looking monotonous.
The shooting process was genuinely fun. The best part of this outfit lies in those light veils. Besides the head veil, there are light blue tulles fluttering on both sides; with just a tiny bit of wind, or when the person makes a frozen posture of raising an arm or turning around, the path of the veil becomes extremely dynamic. Capturing this movement is a real test for the photographer's shutter timing, but the resulting photos are often the most natural. Regarding the light and shadow effects, you might have noticed a large number of glowing spiral lines and stardust in the photos. This is because we used special light-painting techniques during the shoot, combined with a bit of post-compositing to create the light trails. The addition of this effect makes the entire image step away from a simple studio shoot, adding a sense of interwoven magic and dreaminess.
I also did some homework before shooting this set, wanting to grasp the character's posture and expression more precisely. In my heart, Dolia is an incredibly light and agile existence, so I tried to choose some slightly relaxed, lazy, yet elegant sitting poses in the photos. For example, I sat cross-legged on the floor or leaned lightly against a cushion, ensuring my hand movements were stretched out and trying not to look stiff, keeping the person's entire aura soft yet controlled. For eye makeup, I chose an eyeshadow with a bit of blue highlight to echo the sapphire forehead ornament, making the gaze slightly misty for a more atmospheric feel.
This shoot was actually a very fun collaboration with the team. To achieve those light trails in the post-processing, we actually tried back and forth in the studio several times so that the direction of the light trails could surround the person without overwhelming the subject or stealing the focus from the dress. Blue dresses can easily look dull under warm lights, so the brightness and saturation of the colors were fine-tuned in post-processing to maintain the translucency of the blue while ensuring that the fabric textures of the background remained clearly visible.
As a very distinctive hero in Honor of Kings, her design concept that combines fantasy oriental style with exotic culture really hooks me. Moreover, during the process of trying out this cosplay, I deeply felt the cleverness in the styling design: those asymmetrical veils, complex carpet patterns, and even the lighting design all give this set of photos a unique aesthetic. Exotic style cosplay is just like that—it's not just about putting on a piece of clothing, but also about bringing that virtual image in your mind into reality through clothing, makeup, movements, and the environment, endowing it with new life. This is probably the motivation that keeps me passionate about doing various character cosplays. Sharing the photos of Dolia - Steed of Oasis with everyone is a very joyful thing.
