Preparing for this styling on site at the Shanghai Bilibili World (BW) convention, from early morning prep until stepping onto the stage in the afternoon, took immense dedication and effort. Although we made thorough preparations in advance, the ambient heat and intense stage lights posed quite a test to the longevity of the makeup and styling (cosplay & 2D).
First, let's talk about the head styling. To give the blonde wig an organic, airy bounce, I styled and set it the night before to eliminate any plastic-like specular glare. Affixing the Elf ears was a major focal point: because they needed to blend seamlessly with my skin tone, feathering the concealer around the edges took considerable time to ensure zero seams showed under the photographer's sharp lens. For makeup, I applied a reddish gradient eyeshadow deepened at the outer corners, paired with the forehead symbol. To keep my facial features dimensional rather than flat under harsh stage floodlights, the foundation base was set thicker, reinforced with sculpted contouring to guarantee three-dimensional depth in every frame.
The wardrobe design features rich, intricate layering. The white halter top is embellished with a black ribbon bow and gilded patterns; although the high-collared black-and-gold neckpiece looks magnificent, it fits quite snugly, requiring careful neck positioning to keep breathing effortless. Blue draped fabric cascaded from the shoulders accented with black strapping, injecting dynamic motion into every movement. For the lower half, black shorts were layered with sweeping fabric ribbons in gold, blue, and crimson; securing these fluttering sashes required a generous handful of safety pins. The handheld fan prop was exceptionally unique—interweaving shades of blue, yellow, and green like rippling water and stylized clouds, with gilded trims shimmering brilliantly under the spotlights. To anchor the ensemble, I wore glossy black stiletto heels; while walking in them was certainly exhausting, they dramatically elongated leg proportions on stage, elevating the commanding presence of this 2D character.
The stage lighting environment at the convention was intricate and multi-layered. This shoot featured predominantly seated poses, as the tiered stage steps offered great dimensional depth to exploit. While posing, I shifted my weight slightly backward with one leg draped naturally over the other to accentuate leg lines, using the fan as a visual leading line in the composition. When the crew adjusted the lighting, I specifically asked them to angle key lights from the front-quarter to prevent harsh shadows beneath the brow and cheekbones. Maneuvering across elevated steps in stilettos demanded extreme vigilance to avoid slipping or rolling an ankle, proving to be quite an endurance test for core stability (Stage photography).
The energy at BW and Firefly conventions was as electrifying as ever, with that full-throttle creative momentum being deeply inspiring. Backstage, I met countless cosplayers who had also poured their hearts into their crafts; everyone helped each other adjust garments and wigs while trading invaluable insights on prop fabrication and makeup longevity. While dashing across the venue floor in stilettos was physically grueling, being able to showcase our creation on this grand stage and connect with fellow passionate creators made every bit of exhaustion worthwhile.
