The most memorable moments in Convention photos are often captured when the lighting is at its most chaotic. Cosplaying Touhou Project's Patchouli and Koakuma (Little devil cosplay) alongside Cuicui, the bold clash between red and purple hair was exceptionally eye-catching in the dim exhibition hall. Portraying the Little Devil, Lu Lu needed to channel a playful yet studious aura; her red grimoire prop was very easy to focus on due to its clean geometric lines. Meanwhile, Cuicui's Patchouli cosplay took an entirely different aesthetic, rich in extensive lace and pearl adornments, requiring constant attention to frontal lighting to avoid losing fine texture details.
Because the venue lighting was cluttered and harsh overhead lights easily cast unflattering shadows on our faces, we constantly adjusted our positions to face the light sources directly. The black bat wings and elf ears are signature features of Koakuma; to ensure they looked seamless and high quality, considerable effort went into blending the seam between the wig and prosthetic ears. Patchouli's Lolita dress has a very voluminous skirt that easily shifted while walking, making the decision to sit on a chair a clever move—it stabilized the skirt silhouette while showcasing her quiet, studious temperament perfectly.
In terms of pose choreography, to highlight their dynamic relationship, we designed an interactive finger-pointing pose. Compared to solo posing, dual interaction tests chemistry much more. Coordinating within less than a square meter meant ensuring flattering angles and expressions for oneself while leaving ample display room for the partner. That back-and-forth positioning adjustment, while sounding mechanical, produced very natural and organic shots.
For post-processing, we focused primarily on correcting skin tones in shadow areas, color grading Patchouli's soft pink-white palette and the vibrant orange-red hues of Koakuma's hair to keep skin looking lucid and fair without making the red hair look flat. Simultaneously, shallow depth of field blurred the background to accentuate both protagonists in the foreground. I don't usually write long essays like this, but since this Convention photo set involved so much thought, I wanted to share extra details. Makeup prep was fascinating: to give Koakuma spirited eyes, the eye makeup was styled with an upward flick using orange-red eyeshadow to echo her striking red hair. Patchouli used a classic, wide-spread pink-purple blend to make her eyes look round and adorable, matching a fair base makeup to channel a magician's cool, ethereal demeanor.
The depth of eye makeup was finely adjusted according to each character's style. Matching the bright red wig, I lightened Lu Lu's eyebrow color to give her facial features a delicate touch. Patchouli had heavy blunt bangs across her forehead, making overhead lighting more critical to ensure the wig appeared smooth and silky like real hair. While my phone has plenty of discarded outtakes, these two are my absolute favorites because they caught a peaceful moment in a deserted corner, which felt truly wonderful.
This Convention photos experience made me appreciate how two cosplayers can complement and elevate each other under indoor overhead lighting. Far beyond simply making faces look pretty, documenting this sense of narrative and character interaction is what makes cosplay so captivating. Based on their lore personalities, we achieved completely distinct expressions: one leaning in playfully holding a book, the other seated serenely extending an open palm. When the shutter clicked, we captured the authentic essence of this Touhou Project library duo in our own way. Despite the noisy venue, immersing ourselves in this character interaction made the surroundings fall into serene stillness.
Cosplaying these characters involved plenty of homework—figuring out how to hold the book aesthetically, keeping the wings seamless, and sitting in ways that accentuated the skirt's volume were all very practical lessons. Taking duo photos at an anime convention is never easy, especially with a noticeable height difference, relying on a seated-and-standing arrangement to balance the composition.
