For this cosplay appearance at the Jinling Youth Culture Expo, the most demanding yet rewarding part was styling the wig. Transitioning from blonde into soft curls at the ends, I first crimped the roots with a flat iron for volume, then shaped the curve of the bangs piece by piece with hairspray to ensure they framed the face naturally without obstructing my vision. To keep the pink-and-yellow plush beast ears atop my head securely anchored, I used multiple bobby pins crisscrossed directly into the wig cap, so there was zero worry of slipping while walking. For makeup, wearing crimson contact lenses for extended periods can get drying, so eye drops stayed in my bag. The red inverted-triangle mark on my forehead and the three whisker streaks across my cheeks were drawn with waterproof and sweatproof face paint, which held up remarkably well against the crowded, humid convention environment.
The red-black-and-gold battle outfit featured a crimson sequin-textured panel across the chest that caught the overhead lights brilliantly, though its one drawback was how easily it could snag. The wide golden collar carried noticeable heft, but wearing it was completely worth the design fidelity. The transparent orb prop emitting a blue-violet glow in my hand was actually stuffed with micro fairy lights, which instantly maximized cinematic ambiance when shooting in dimmer corners. Because the acrylic shell readily collected fingerprints, I constantly wiped it down with a microfiber cloth to maintain crystal clarity.
Meeting so many fellow enthusiasts on site for group photos was pure joy. Standing together with cosplayers sporting diverse hair colors and styles created an incredibly rich chromatic palette. There were cosplayers with white beast ears, reddish-brown locks, and vibrant shades of purple, blue, and pink—each person's unique garment craftsmanship and props coming together into an absolute visual feast. I also crossed paths with friends rocking tall blue horns and pink feathered crowns; everyone gathered to help each other adjust costumes and wigs while trading styling tips and touch-up advice, creating an atmosphere you can only truly experience at an anime convention.
The hall lighting was quite chaotic, making finding flattering angles a true technical challenge. Overhead downlights easily cast harsh shadows across the face, so I prioritized diffuse ambient light or used a small portable fill light. Exchanging lighting and retouching tips with other creators—like bouncing light under strong downlights or slightly suppressing highlights in post-production—was immensely insightful.
Even though I'm posting these photos half a month late, organizing through them brought all that infectious joy rushing back. The afterglow of a convention truly lingers; every passionately prepared character brings fresh inspiration. Glancing through all these memories in my photo gallery, I feel fully recharged and ready for the next event.
