Today, while cosplaying Wuthering Waves at Bilibili World (BW), I brought along a Sony A7M5 paired with the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II lens to snap some convention photos for my friends. As someone who frequently cosplays and usually stands in front of the lens, stepping behind the viewfinder for the entire event gave me a genuine appreciation of just how demanding candid portrait photography can be. I used to think shooting convention halls was straightforward, but taking the helm yourself reveals that locking focus quickly amidst dense crowds while capturing a cosplayer's split-second movement places immense demands on your gear.
The combo of the Sony A7M5 and 2470GM2 genuinely exceeded my expectations across the convention floor. When cosplaying, we often execute dramatic, wide-ranging movements—twirling, whipping our wigs, or lifting skirt trains. The camera's 30 fps continuous burst shooting proved to be an absolute game-changer. Whether it was the sheer translucent gauze of a pink-haired girl's skirt billowing mid-turn, or the exact beat of a blonde character unfurling a folding fan, reviewing frames after pressing the shutter showed every micro-detail impeccably preserved with dynamic tension dialed to the max.
Shooting in the convention's outdoor plaza mercilessly tested camera optics. Beyond the sheer density of the crowd, the lighting contrast was extreme. The sun blazed fiercely outside, aggravated by glare bouncing off blue glass curtain walls, yet the A7M5's AI-driven subject recognition locked steadfastly onto the subjects' eyes. Even as swarms of passersby walked through the frame, the tracking box clung tenaciously to the primary subject without yielding a single out-of-focus throwaway frame. What equally amazed me was the latitude—a full 16 stops of dynamic range ensured that under such brutal contrast ratios, specular highlights never blew out into clipped whites and deep shadows avoided turning into muddy blacks. During post-production color grading, this dynamic headroom gave an extraordinarily forgiving safety margin when tweaking exposure and chromatic balance.
I managed to capture a vast array of unique styling aesthetics throughout the day: a dreamy long-pink-haired look in white and cyan gossamer; a blue-haired miniskirt styled with thigh-high White stockings; an imposing red-and-black palette paired with plush beast ears; a blonde character clad in an ivory-and-gold modernized cheongsam; and expansive, wide-sleeved ancient garments. Every costume featured distinct textiles—the luminous translucence of sheer tulle, the rich sheen of bridal satin, and the structured grain of leather armor were faithfully translated through the glass. The 24-70mm focal range proved to be an absolute killer at an anime convention, allowing me to capture wider environmental context to establish the venue, while instantly zooming in for crisp medium-close portraits with tremendous flexibility.
Shifting perspective from cosplayer to photographer granted me a fresh creative lens. Being in costume teaches you which angles flatter the silhouette most; holding the camera teaches you how to anticipate and seize that exact angle.
